And the location of the ruins is very important, located between the Byzantine Hagia (Saint) Sofia mosque\u003cbr/\u003eand the Topkapi Palace - the administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Alpay Pasinli, Istanbul's Archaeology Museum Director\u003cbr/\u003eUnfortunately archaeologists will not be able to uncover the palace in its full grandeur, since large parts of it lie directly beneath some of Istanbul's main tourist sights.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ruins are situated between monuments of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires - Saint Sofia - once a cathedral, later a mosque and now a museum - and the Blue Mosque.\u003cbr/\u003eEven more frustrating for would-be excavators of the palace, the pace of their work is largely dictated by present-day developers.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"So far it's been a rather piecemeal effort and it's been an effort that seems to be spurred by development rather than the archaeological interest in the city. That is, the excavations are done by developers who are interested in building a hotel on certain\u003cbr/\u003eproperties in Sultanahmet. And that's not the way archaeology should be done.
