Wide of Zhang Zhengqiang, alone on lake shore\u003cbr/\u003eIn a country where protest could lead to prison, a man who calls himself a \"vagabond environmentalist\" is noisily fighting to stop pollution, and expose corruption and incompetence around what was once one of China's most acclaimed beauty spots. \u003cbr/\u003eOver the years Zhang Zhengqiang has been threatened, beaten up, and partially blinded by people he calls \"thugs\" hired to thwart his mission to clean up Dianchi Lake, near Kunming in Yunnan Province; China's sixth biggest freshwater lake.\u003cbr/\u003eA hundred and twenty years ago the vast lake so captivated a Chinese poet he wrote ecstatically of its fragrant fields, lotus flowers and green willow buds.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, Zhang Zhengqiang visits the shores of the lake, not to pay homage but to lament and document its state.\u003cbr/\u003eIndustrial waste, agricultural run-off and domestic sewage have combined to kill off its beauty and much of its life. \u003cbr/\u003eZhang, who was born nearby, describes it as his mother, and says he'll never stop fighting those who try to destroy her. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's become a familiar figure over the years since the factories came to town, and the area's degeneration began. \u003cbr/\u003eZhang goes from village to village noting down the catalogue of problems, and urging locals to take action. His concern isn't just the land, it's the people who live on it, too. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the small village of Jiang Ao, close to Yunnan's largest cement works, he finds a ready audience. Its residents claim that 53 of them have various forms of cancer which they blame on the polluted environment. \u003cbr/\u003eWith his backing they are asking the government to close down the factory and move them to new land. \u003cbr/\u003eSixty-eight year old Zhang Xueqiang is one of those suffering ill-health. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When you're sick it's normal to go to the doctor,\" he said, \"and the doctor treats you. But, if after the treatment, you keep on living in a polluted place, it's useless.\" Zhang Xueqiang speaks with a particular passion; he has lung cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the fish in the lake have died off, so have the fishermen's livelihoods. \u003cbr/\u003eMany now farm what land they can find, irrigating it from waters that flow into the lake; waters so polluted the residents of Ji Xia village dub it \"the black river\". Luckily drinking water comes from taps, but some rely on underground wells and these they claim have almost run dry.\u003cbr/\u003eZhang reaches out to people who live with these conditions in his quest to bring change to all their lives.  His open, fearless engagement with people, and urging of protest, is astonishing to Chinese, who know the potential dire consequences of going up against authority. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Kunming, he tells a small crowd in the street \"if people come here to pollute and cause destruction our environment will be lost\", prompting an outpouring of bitterness from a woman who seems to have a debilitating, facial disease. \u003cbr/\u003eHer words are difficult to understand because the muscles of her face appear paralysed but she seems to say, passionately, \"In the past water here used to be clean. But they used too much fertiliser on the land. You know why I look like this? Because I've been drinking water from Dianchi Lake for years!\"\u003cbr/\u003eZhang has brought countless actions against polluting factories and their owners and has had successes against them. But he's made many enemies.  He's been violently beaten on several occasions by hired thugs, and even stabbed, he says. He lost the sight in one eye after one such attack. \"I have injuries all over me,\" he says, \"my bones have been broken.\" He's also been jailed in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cost of his activism goes even deeper than that. He lives in a tiny shack, with few possessions, and little more than his driving obsession to keep him company. His wife left him years ago, unable to cope with the pressure of being married to a man who attracted trouble like a lightning rod attracts lightning. \u003cbr/\u003eSome people dismiss him as a crank, he says, but it seems this activist is finally in step with the authorities, or perhaps, vice versa. Last year the Chinese government began taking action to ban pollutants in the area and crack down on what they called the \"bumpkin policies\" of local officials in the provinces who ignore regulations on the environment. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the official Xinhua News Agency, the government announced in April this year that it would spend more than 4 (b) billion US dollars to clean up Dianchi Lake over the next 3 years.\u003cbr/\u003eZhang is sure to take this as proof that he's been right all along, and that his lonely campaign to make his \"mother\" lake worthy once more of a
