Market.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are hunted for their meat, their eggs are stolen for sale and trapped by fishing nets, and now the numbers of marine turtles are dangerously low.\u003cbr/\u003eSix of the seven species of marine turtles are listed as \"Endangered\" or \"Critically Endangered\".\u003cbr/\u003eSeven protected reserves have been created around the world to combat the threat of extinction facing these animals.\u003cbr/\u003eLa Flor beach in San Juan del Sur, on the Pacific coast of Southern Nicaragua, is home to a nature reserve dedicated to the protection of marine turtles.\u003cbr/\u003eMarine turtles spend most of their life out at sea, but when its time to lay eggs, they come to land looking for a safe place to nest.\u003cbr/\u003eThe beaches they use have to be protected as poachers will lay in wait for the animals, wanting their shells, leather, meat and eggs to sell on. \u003cbr/\u003eThe marine turtles arrive at nightfall, as there are fewer risks from animal predators at this time.  \u003cbr/\u003eFor most turtle species, digging the nest takes about 45 minutes. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the fact they can lay about 100 leathery shelled eggs per hour, the newly hatched turtles are also very vulnerable, and very few make it into adulthood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nicaraguan government has, however, found a solution to human predators: they pay benefits of $40 to people who in the past have relied on poaching turtle eggs to survive.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as this incentive, soldiers, police officers, forest rangers and volunteers guard the beaches to protect the animals and their offspring.\u003cbr/\u003eAlejandro Medina is a forest ranger. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's been determined to protect the turtles since his childhood. But he's not alone now. He has help from people that live in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe forest keepers and volunteers paint a mark on the turtles' shells to record how many turtles arrive at the coast. \u003cbr/\u003eMarks such as these help monitor the marine turtle population, migration patterns and breeding activity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protected marine turtle can now crawl safely back to the sea.\u003cbr/\u003eThe length of time the eggs incubate, and the sex of the hatchlings, depends upon the temperature of the sand. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sand in La Flor is warm and dark, which produces mostly female turtles after seven to eight weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hatchlings then take a few days to dig their way through the sand to the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen leaving the nest - usually at night - the baby turtles instinctively head for the ocean. \u003cbr/\u003eSome hatchlings will reach the sea, while crabs and sea birds attack the others on the beach. \u003cbr/\u003eEven in the sea the hatchlings are far from safe, they are in danger of being eaten by fish.\u003cbr/\u003eMarine turtles can come to land for reasons other than laying eggs.\u003cbr/\u003eThis Paslama (species of marine turtle) turtle has been caught on a hook and has left the sea to look for help. \u003cbr/\u003eThe forest rangers free her from the fishing line and return her safely to the sea.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hunting and sale of marine turtles and their eggs produce an average of U$D 580,000 a year according to the World Wildlife Fund's research.\u003cbr/\u003eThe markets in Managua are full of tropical fruits and shellfish found on the Pacific Coast. \u003cbr/\u003eYou can buy turtle eggs too, despite the tough new rules.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a constant struggle to protect these animals because of the large amount of money that can be earned by hunting them.\u003cbr/\u003eBut environmental organisations are satisfied that the new law in Nicaragua is a step in the right
