\u003cbr/\u003eThe methane produced by the manure of a typical 1,330-pound cow translates into about five tons of CO2 per year. \u003cbr/\u003eThat is about the same amount generated annually by a typical U.S. car (assuming 20 miles per gallon and travelling 12,000 miles per year). \u003cbr/\u003eBut now some British farmers are trying their dairy cattle on a more natural diet in an effort to reduce the amount of methane they produce by up to one fifth. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Underhill Farm in Somerset, is the picture of a rural idyll. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the lush green pastures disguise the fact that farms like this are contributing to global warming.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because just one cow can produce up to 700 litres of methane gas a day.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn a bid to turn that around, the cows are being fed a new diet that can reduce the amount of burping and cut emissions of methane by 20 per cent.\u003cbr/\u003eAll farms have to do is feed the cows a more natural diet, by mixing straw and hay with their food.\u003cbr/\u003eDavid Beever, an Emeritus Professor of Animal science at Reading University, who now works for the animal nutritionist Keenan Rumans says that is easier said than done.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Cows are like children,\" he says adding that if you give them a choice cows will leave the greens. \u003cbr/\u003eTo try to coax the cattle into taking up the more natural diet, the food that they enjoy is mixed with straw or hay.\u003cbr/\u003eA special machine is used to cut the straw into 6cm or 7cm long strips which can be mixed with silage, wheat, maize, soya or sugar beet.\u003cbr/\u003eSomerset farmer Daniel Macey from Underhill Farm the revised diet has helped to increase milk quantities and ensures the cows live longer, healthier lives.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said some cows are living for up to six lactations (have given birth to six calves) which has effectively increased their life span by 30 per cent.\u003cbr/\u003eThe diet has the added environmental benefit that for each litre of milk, only 23 or 24 litres of methane is produced instead of previous levels at about 28 litres of methane per litre of milk.\u003cbr/\u003eNigel Bell, professor of Environmental Pollution at London's Imperial College, says the new diet as a \"win, win situation\" since the emission of methane through farming has largely been overlooked.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that methane emissions from farming have played second string to other more aggressive forms from motor vehicles, aircraft and power generation.\u003cbr/\u003eBell adds that the diet - also being fed to cattle in Europe, Australia and New Zealand -should help reduce greenhouse gases. \u003cbr/\u003eMethane accounts for 16 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions, according to the International Energy Agency. \u003cbr/\u003eThat is far less than the most prevalent greenhouse gas, CO2, which accounts for 75 percent of the global total.
