But extending that streak into this election year may not be in the cards.\u003cbr/\u003eAs Democratic opposition put an election-year focus on the deals as culprits in the loss of U.S. jobs - and a small but crucial number of Republicans try to protect sugar and textile producers - recently negotiated trade accords with Central America, Australia and Morocco stand almost no chance of being ratified this year.\u003cbr/\u003eSenate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (Rep. Iowa), at a hearing on Tuesday on trade policy, said that with enough political will all three agreements could be implemented this year. But \"unfortunately, political courage is not always in endless supply,\" notably in this election year, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eSenator Max Baucus, top Democrat on the committee and a supporter of free trade, took aim at the Bush Administration, saying that foreign policy considerations have trumped efforts at job creation at the White House.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Trade Representative Robert Zoellick defended the White House's push for free trade agreements by saying it put pressure on other more intransigent nations to open up their economies to US goods and services.\u003cbr/\u003eSenators at the hearing also called for tougher measures against China, with Senator Olympia Snowe accusing the Chinese of \"egregious practices\" of deliberately undervaluing their currency to reduce the price of their goods by 15 to 40 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eAmerica's trade deficit with China last year hit a record 124 (b) billion (US) dollars, the highest imbalance ever recorded with any one country.\u003cbr/\u003eZoellick said he was spending a significant amount of time on such issues as Chinese tax policies that disadvantage American exports of semiconductors and other goods and rampant piracy of intellectual property rights. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also noted that U.S. exports to China have grown 75 percent over the past three years, and China has become a major
