But the additional beauty of the electric jeepney is that it also aims to alleviate urban problems like air pollution and waste management. And that battery, the energy is taken from a depot, what we call a \u003cbr/\u003ebio-digester, which essentially is a plant that produces methane or harvest methane gas from organic wastes. So that is the source of energy for this. Thye're run along fixed routes, like small buses. \u003cbr/\u003eThey provide cheap transportation for millions but also contribute to the levels of air pollution in Manila. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Jeepney has its origin in surplus US Army jeeps left by American troops after the World War II. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile regular fume-puffing jeepneys guzzle 300 pesos (US$6.50) or more of diesel each day, the new jeepney can run 140 kilometres (87 miles) on an eight-hour battery charge at a minimum estimated cost of 120 pesos (US$3).\u003cbr/\u003eTwo environmentally friendly electric Jeepneys were locally designed and made in China. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir recent debut in the capital's financial district of Makati by Greenpeace and Green Renewable Independent Power Producer Inc., or GRIPP, the lead proponent of the initiative draw a crowd of people curious about the new twist on an old favourite. \u003cbr/\u003eVon Hernandez, campaigns director for Greenpeace Southeast Asia says the new version of the iconic jeepney will be more environmentally friendly. \u003cbr/\u003eRobert Puckett, one of the developers from the design firm Solar Electric Company, says the jeepney is powered by an electric motor similar to some mass transportation system found elsewhere in the world but is now just being adapted in the Philippines. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Hernandez, however, what makes it different and what will make it environment-friendly would be the source of its electric power that will be produced by plants using ordinary urban wastes not fossil fuels. \u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace
