Various shots demonstrating social networking functions of Nokia C6\u003cbr/\u003eMobile phones trends for 2011 include faster processors, the battle of the operating systems and glasses-free 3D technology on the new wave of handsets.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with increasingly sophisticated devices, are we still using our smartphones to make phone calls?\u003cbr/\u003eHand pressed to the ear, deep in conversation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the talk of the mobile industry is no longer just what handset to own, but what operating system (OS) it runs.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in 2011 the OS war is hotting up with Microsoft reasserting its authority with a new Windows platform.\u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft's Windows Phone 7 OS launched in the US on November 8, 2010 and hopes to steal a march on Google's Android.\u003cbr/\u003eThe system replaces Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 platform - which was losing market share to its rivals BlackBerry OS, Apple's iPhone and Google Android according to information technology researchers Gartner Inc.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new Windows Phone 7 OS is based on a system of tiles which link to applications, features, contacts and web pages.\u003cbr/\u003eThe OS also synchronises with user's Xbox Live accounts allowing social gaming on the move.\u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft demonstrated the system's onscreen virtual keyboard which comes with built-in spell checks and predictive input.\u003cbr/\u003eMost importantly Windows Phone 7 features a mobile version of the Internet Explorer browser capable of playing Flash content - unlike the Apple iPhone.\u003cbr/\u003eSteve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO says: \"We've focussed in on the way real people really want to use their phones when they're on the go. We can expect to see a lot more Windows Phone 7 devices in 2011 hopefully.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the battle for the smartphone market is intensifying.\u003cbr/\u003eIn November 2010, Information technology researchers Gartner reported Nokia's Symbian OS is currently the most widely used, followed by Google's Android and Apple's iPhone OS.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Research in Motion's BlackBerry OS is gaining ground and now claims 15 per cent of the market.\u003cbr/\u003eBlackBerry's new Bold comes with a high-definition screen, 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as the operating systems include more features and sophisticated applications, the processors which power them are getting faster.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of the Android devices in 2010 were powered by Qualcomm chip sets and they're one of the major chip manufacturers,\" says Doku. \"They'll definitely be making dual-core - much faster processors - so we'll definitely be seeing much faster handsets on the market as well.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut whichever processors the phone manufacturers fit in their latest handsets, Microsoft still has to convince them to use its OS.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's very early days yet and it's very tentative first steps, a lot of manufacturers have pooled a lot of energy and effort investing in that platform,\" says Doku. \"So we'll definitely see a wider range of handsets in terms of form factors and design for Windows Phone 7 so there's a lot of potential there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe world's largest mobile manufacturer - Nokia - is also looking forward to an important year ahead.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Finnish mobile maker's Symbian OS is also the leading mobile platform but lost ground to newcomers - in particular the open source Android OS.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, phones such as the Nokia N8 (launched on September 30, 2010 in its home market) - which is its first feature phone to come with a 12 megapixel camera capable of taking high-quality photos which can be viewed on the 3.5 inch 360 x 640 touchscreen.\u003cbr/\u003e3 OS includes single tap interaction and multi-touch capabilities with gesture support for zooming and viewing photos.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the biggest breakthrough trends tipped for 2011 is glasses-free 3D technology.\u003cbr/\u003eVideo games console maker Nintendo paved the way with its 3DS handheld console.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was unveiled at the Los Angeles E3 games expo in June 2010 by Nintendo's president and CEO Satoru Iwata.\u003cbr/\u003eThe handheld 3DS (available in Europe and North America from March 2011) uses an autostereoscopic screen, capable of displaying 3D pictures without the need for special eyewear.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently the technology is only viable on small screens - so no good for TVs or cinema screens but ideal for mobile phones.\u003cbr/\u003eDoku says: \"3D's definitely going to be a major factor.
