Various of sunset at bali beach. \u003cbr/\u003eBali is increasingly becoming a Mecca for divers and snorkellers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe white sands and coral reefs of the Lembongan, Penida and Ceningan islands now offer more than 15 dive sites and are regarded by many as Balis''s most exhilarating dive locations.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the rising the number of tourists wishing to explore the coral reefs is raising concerns among environmentalists. \u003cbr/\u003eEach year millions of tourists from around the world enjoy Bali for it''s beautiful white beaches, warm water and the charm of its people. \u003cbr/\u003eWhether it''s lounging on the beach or catching a wave on a surf board, the attraction of this Indonesian island is easy to see. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The people are very friendly, it''s obviously a lot cheaper than other places. and some of the best waves in the world and warm water which makes a nice change from England,\" says Luke, a British tourist who enjoys regular surfing holidays here.\u003cbr/\u003eBali has traditionally attracted many surfers to its shores which regularly enjoys swells of up to 12 feet (3.66 metres) between April and November.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the island is increasingly becoming popular for its underwater scenery. \u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia has the world''s richest assortment of coral (450 species) from fringe and barrier reefs to atolls and patch reefs. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country''s 85,700 sq km of reefs constitute 14 percent of the world''s total. \u003cbr/\u003eThe three islands of Lembongan, Penida and Ceningan on the south east coast of the island now offer more than 15 dive sites between them.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd according to one Lembongan based dive operator, demand for diving trips has increased so much over the last few years that companies have barely needed to advertise their services. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There has been a significant increase of number of guests compared to the previous years. So even though we don''t do any publication and advertising, we have many guests coming here,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd this is why. \u003cbr/\u003eThese are the coral reefs around Lembongan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe island''s crystal waters are famous for ocean sunfish and manta ray.\u003cbr/\u003eThe opportunity to spot the rare marine life attracts large numbers of divers and snorkellers. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the recent surge in popularity of the island is causing concern about its impact on the environment. \u003cbr/\u003eDivers can have a significant negative impact on coral reefs. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to diver operators, divers intentionally or inadvertently touch corals an average of 10 times per dive. \u003cbr/\u003eThe vast majority of damage is caused by beginners, who often break the corals for collection.\u003cbr/\u003eBoat anchoring is also a significant concern. \u003cbr/\u003eTo avoid further damage of the marine ecosystem, conservationists have been working on promoting environmentally friendly marine tourism.\u003cbr/\u003eTour operators have been educated on the importance of a healthy marine ecosystem and have created codes of conduct for their divers and instructors. \u003cbr/\u003eSome have put more investment into coral viewing boats where tourists can experience the richness of the underwater world without having to be in the water. \u003cbr/\u003eBut an area of such outstanding beauty is always going to attract people wanting to see the reefs up close. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Many years ago our marine biologists did a reef survey.
