products were only on hand for emergencies and were never used by athletes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe officials defended their actions at a hastily arranged news conference after a front-page story in the Liberation newspaper revealed that about 10 percent of the medicines the team took to Sydney were banned for athletes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Denis Masseglia, Secretary General of the French Olympic team, said the procedure they followed was declared and authorised. \u003cbr/\u003eOf the 580 types of drugs the French team brought to the Olympics, 57 are prohibited by the International Olympic Committee and are considered doping products, according to Liberation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe products in question include 18 medicines that are banned outright for use by athletes, 36 that can only be used with special permission from the IOC, and three that can be used in limited doses, Liberation reported.\u003cbr/\u003eMaurice Vrillac, the French team's head doctor, said the French athletes took none of the 18 drugs that are banned outright.\u003cbr/\u003eAs for the 36 that need special permission, the team was given such permission on 12 occasions, Vrillac said.\u003cbr/\u003eVrillac said if any athlete had needed to take a banned substance, he wouldn't have been able to continue competing. \u003cbr/\u003eLiberation published excerpts of the list it said was submitted by the French Olympic Committee five months before the Games and cleared by the Australian Health Ministry.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the medicine was also on hand for use by non-athletes in the French delegation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe banned substances were mostly corticosteroids, diuretics, anesthetics and antihistamines, according to the newspaper.\u003cbr/\u003eFrance placed sixth at the Sydney Games with 38
