Screen shot from YouTube.com\u003cbr/\u003eMTV owner Viacom launched a law suit against the popular video-sharing site YouTube and its corporate parent, Google, on Tuesday, seeking more than 1 (b) billion US dollars in damages on claims of widespread copyright infringement.\u003cbr/\u003eViacom claims that YouTube has displayed more than 160-thousand unauthorised video clips from its cable networks, which also include Comedy Central, VH1 and Nickelodeon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lawsuit, filed in the US District Court in New York, marks a sharp escalation of long-simmering tensions between Viacom and YouTube and represents the biggest confrontation to date between a major media company and the hugely popular video-sharing site, which Google bought in November (2006) for 1.76 (b) billion US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eTuna Amobi, Media Equity Analyst with Standard and Poor's, said that in order for YouTube to remain viable it needed to strike deals with major creators of professional video content.\u003cbr/\u003eYouTube's soaring popularity has been a cause of fascination but also fear among the owners of traditional media outlets, who worry that YouTube's displaying of clips from their programmes, without compensation, will lure away viewers and advertising revenue from cable and broadcast TV.\u003cbr/\u003eViacom was especially at risk because much of its programming is aimed at younger audiences who also are heavy internet users.\u003cbr/\u003eLast month Viacom demanded that YouTube remove more than 100-thousand unauthorised clips after several months of talks between the companies broke down.\u003cbr/\u003eYouTube said at the time that it would comply with the request and said it cooperated with all copyright holders to remove programming as soon as it was notified of copyright issues.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As fast as YouTube is complying to take down this copyrighted content, which they are required to do by copyright laws, these clips are just getting back up there, just as quick as they are being taken down so this is kind of the viral feature I think of user generated content,\" Amobi said.\u003cbr/\u003eS\u0026amp;P's Tuna Amobi said the lawsuit may be just a bit of \"posturing,\" and said the two sides had much to gain from working together.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It could be a win win situation.
