Pan right of the Ryans walking toward pier by the Bay Bridge
A new hobby has got people around the world poking under benches, crawling around sculptures and ambling through the streets with GPS devices, in search of tiny electronic boxes.
For those who want to avoid the tour bus, "geocaching" is the perfect way to discover a new city.
San Francisco is one of the world's must-see cities for travellers, but there are many approaches to discovering its charm.
While most ride the cable cars and enjoy the city's hills and waterfront, others prefer to seek out special spots chosen by locals and typically overlooked by tourists.
Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunt in which participants search for hidden markers or containers full of tiny objects that others have left behind.
Using GPS devices, geocachers locate the caches using latitude and longitude, recording their findings at the cache and online.
This hobby was made possible by the global positioning system or GPS, which was developed by the US department of Defence.
Rick Wong, the Website Administrator for Geocaches in the Bay Area of California, explains how the system works.
"Your GPS receiver receives signals from at least four of these satellites that are over the sky. The satellites are arranged so that you should be able to see at least four of them no matter where you are on the planet. And by synchronising the time delay that it takes the signal to get to your device, your device can figure out where it is, based on the positions of all those satellites," he says.
Prior to 2000 the signals were scrambled so that civilian readings were limited to an accuracy of about 100 metres, according to gpsgames.org.
But when former president Clinton announced the end of the scrambling of GPS signals, the game was on.
The first cache was hidden in Portland in the state of Oregon, quickly followed by others in Kansas, Illinois and California.
However there are still problems using the GPS system among the towering skyscrapers of San Francisco.
Rick Wong says that making repeated readings can help to fix the problem.
"The signal can bounce off these very tall buildings and so getting an accurate reading for your GPS if you're going to mark a waypoint usually means you want to take a bunch of readings to get it right," he says.
The hunt has truly become global since its origins in the US Pacific Northwest a decade ago - there are now more than one (m) million active caches all over the planet, with 4-5 (m) million people participating worldwide.
In the last month alone, people have logged more than four (m) million new finds, according to geocaching.com.
Father and son team Larry and Sean Ryan look for caches whenever they get a chance.
Visiting from Cadie, Texas, the Ryans took advantage of the chance to get to know some out-of-the-way spots while touring San Francisco with friends.
For this virtual cache in downtown San Francisco, searchers have to find two plaques and email the dedication dates on each of them.
The way to find a cache in an urban area is to find the street location and then zero in using more accurate GPS readings with a compass at the site, he says.
As the Ryans explore San Francisco's embarcadero area, they head for unique sites chosen by locals rather than the typical tourist itinerary.
As they get closer to the cache, the GPS device tells them how far they are from it.
They often do geocaching while on hikes, but the urban search can be more complex.
This cache, considered high in difficulty, is maintained by an avid local geocacher.
They know this one is a magnetic cache, so they search underneath the metal railings of this fountain near San Francisco's Embarcadero waterfront.
Once they've located it they write their geocaching name, FamilieRyan.
Then they put the tiny magnetic strip right back where they found it.
Then it's time to continue exploring the city.
There are plenty of benefits to the practice, says Larry Ryan.
"It's good for you, you're out walking around.
