township, best known for its links to the anti-apartheid movement. \u003cbr/\u003eThe opening of a new super mall in Soweto today (September 27, 2007)  means they will be able to spend their disposable income to the benefit of local businesses.\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction cranes towering and the noise of tiles being pounded, concrete being mixed and trucks and cherry pickers rumbling are the sights and sounds of a business boom in South Africa's most famous township.\u003cbr/\u003eBlack South Africans are reaping the benefits of a growing economy, and at the heart of it all is Soweto, the sprawling township in the southwest of Johannesburg that was at the centre of the anti-apartheid struggle.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the last five years or so, new houses have been built in the once overcrowded and underdeveloped area. \u003cbr/\u003eMassive infrastructure projects have seen roads tarred and electricity installed. \u003cbr/\u003eNew parks have been landscaped and the derelict landmark power station is to be revamped into a massive entertainment complex.\u003cbr/\u003eMost obvious, though, are the shopping malls, once chiefly associated with Johannesburg's wealthy northern suburbs. \u003cbr/\u003eOpening on Thursday September 27, 2007 is the Maponya Mall, a 65,000-square-metre (699,654-square-foot), 600 million rand (US$86 million) development by Richard Maponya, one of Soweto's oldest entrepreneurs.\u003cbr/\u003eMaponya says the people of Soweto deserve good local facilities. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he wants money created in the township to stay in the region and help improve the quality of life for local people. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile most welcome the arrival of the malls, there have been casualties of the boom, those small local shops that have served their communities for year but are now unable to compete with the large retailers.\u003cbr/\u003eA local business woman Doris Makhetha says that ahead of the opening of the new Mall they have already seen business drop. \u003cbr/\u003eAround the corner from Maponya Mall, owner of Welcome Butchery and Supermarket, Patrick Siswana, anticipates that for the next six months his business will decline as curious Sowetans see what the mall has to offer.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the malls are only serving to widen the gap between the haves and the have-nots.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers are more upbeat, focusing on what the malls bring: jobs, cheaper prices and an end to trips into the city centre to buy anything other than the most basic of groceries.\u003cbr/\u003eSoweto was created in the early 1960s by the apartheid government to house the labourers, most of them black, who worked in the mines and other industries in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eMany families were also settled there after they were forced out of their homes in areas declared only for white residents.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was the scene of the historic 1976 student uprising against apartheid and has been home to some of the country's most important political figures, such as former president Nelson Mandela and fellow Nobel peace prize Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an acknowledgment of its importance, city officials have invested heavily Soweto's development.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has become on of Johannesburg's most marketable tourist attractions, drawing numerous tours. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile this has created a new elite of well-connected black businessmen, the government has been challenged to see that the vast majority of South Africa's black poor also benefit.\u003cbr/\u003eGoolam Ballim, chief economist for Standard Bank, says mainstream business ignore Soweto, at their peril.\u003cbr/\u003eJason Ngobeni, executive director of the department of economic development of Johannesburg, which includes Soweto, says the government has finally realised the financial strength of the people of Soweto. \u003cbr/\u003eNgobeni says the spending power of Soweto amounts to about 5 billion rand
