The festival, which is celebrating it's 53rd year and it's first festival of the new millennium runs from May 10 to May 21st.\u003cbr/\u003eOf the twenty three films selected for the main competition, six hail from Asia, eleven from Europe, four from America and two from the Middle East.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Chinese festival favourite, ZHANG YIMOU is absent from competition this year, his compatriot JIAN WEN will be making himself known to international audiences with his second film \"During That War\" (Guizi Lai Le).\u003cbr/\u003eOther Asian films include IM KWON TAEK'S \"Chunhyang\"-(the first Korean film ever to be included in competition at Cannes); Japanese director,  AOYAMA SHINJI's \"Eureka\", NAGISA OSHIMA'S gay-themed samurai film, \"Gohatto\" (Taboo), EDWARD YANG'S \"Yi Yi\" and Hong Kong director, WONG KAR-WAI'S latest untitled feature.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter his previous entry, \"Land and Freedom\", British director and regular Cannes attendee, KEN LOACH is back in the race with \"Bread \u0026amp; Roses\", a tale of latin american immigrants and his first venture shot on American turf in Los Angeles.\u003cbr/\u003eSwedish actress turned director, LIV ULLMAN is also back with \"Trolosa\" (The Faithless), alongside fellow Scandinavian, ROY ANDERSSON who returns to the world of cinema with \"Sanger Fran Andra Vaningen\" (Songs From the Second Floor) after a twenty-five year break.  \"Breaking The Waves\" director, LARS VON TRIER is in competition again with his musical, \"Dancer In the Dark\".\u003cbr/\u003eOn the American front, brothers JOEL and ETHAN COEN are back on the croisette with \"0 Brother, Where Art Thou?\" starring hearthrob GEORGE CLOONEY and festival veteran, JOHN TUTURRO. Also on the US competition line up is JAMES GRAY (who previously directed \"Little Odessa)  with his film, \"The Yards\"starring MARK WAHLBERG, JOAQUIN PHOENIX, JAMES CAAN, CHARLIZE THERON and FAYE DUNAWAY.\u003cbr/\u003eNEIL LABUTE (of \"In the Company of Men\" fame) is back with his new feature, \"Nurse Betty\" featuring MORGAN FREEMAN, RENEE ZELLWEGER, CHRIS ROCK, GREG KINNEAR and AARON ECKHART, as is period novel specialist JAMES IVORY with his adaptation of HENRY JAMES' \"The Golden Bowl\" starring NICK NOLTE, UMA THURMAN and ANJELICA HUSTON. Last but not least is AMOS KOLLEK with his catchily titled offering, \"Fast Food Fast Women\".\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough not in competition, BRIAN DE PALMA's drama, \"Mission To Mars\" will also be screening during the festival alongside STEPHEN HOPKINS' \"Under Suspicion\", and DARREN ARONOFSKY'S \"Requiem for a Dream\". Aronofsky dazzled critics with his brain-teasing debut feature,\"PI\" at the  Sundance film festival two years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter his success with \"The Ice Storm\" and more recently \"Ride With The Devil\", ANG LEE will be promoting his return to Taiwanese film-making with his martial arts period film,\"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon\" with Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh. Meanwhile, maverick indie director, JOHN WATERS couldn't resist the chance to flaunt his latest feature, \"Cecil B. Demented\". \u003cbr/\u003eEURYTHMICS' member, DAVE STEWART will be jetting down to the croisette to show off his first film effort, \"Honest\" starring three of the four ALL SAINTS members, including NICOLE and NATALIE APPLETON and MELANIE BLATT. \u003cbr/\u003eOther Hollywood stars who will make an appearance before the cameras are MELANIE GRIFFITH, SEAN PENN,\u003cbr/\u003eKIM BASINGER, CALISTA FLOCKHART, HOLLY HUNTER and veteran leading man, GREGORY PECK. The star of \"To Kill A Mockingbird\", \"Spellbound\", \"The Gunfighter\" and \"The Boys From Brazil\" will receive a special honour for his lifetime achievements while at the festival. A documentary  entitled \"A Conversation With Gregory Peck\" by BARBARA KOPPLE (who won plaudits for her recent documentary about WOODY ALLEN) , will also be screened.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the well established younger generation of french directors whose films have been selected for competition are OLIVIER ASSAYAS' \"Les Destinees Sentimentales\" and ARNAUD DESPLECHIN's \"Esther Kahn\". Austrian film maker, MICHAEL HANEKE (whose last film, \"Funny Games\" made waves at Cannes) is also under the French banner this year with his entry, \"Code Inconnu\" starring JULIETTE BINOCHE and last but not least is DOMINIK MOLL with his film,\"Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"Kippur\" by Israeli director, AMOS GITAI (who last year presented \"Kadosh\") has also been selected for the official competition while 20 year-old Iranian film maker, SAMIRA MAKHMALBAF returns to the festival with her second film, \"Takhte Siah\" (The Blackboard). Makhmalbaf first made a splash on the international scene last year when her film was selected for the \"Un Certain Regard\" section of the festival. Last but not least, Russian director PAVEL LOUNGUINE's film, \"La Noce\" has also been selected.\u003cbr/\u003eFrench director, LUC BESSON (\"Joan of Arc\" and \"The Fifth Element\") will be heading up the festival jury as president.The thesp-heavy competition jury also includes British actors Jeremy Irons and Kristin Scott Thomas, Spanish actress Aitana Sanchez-Gijon, Gallic thesp-director Nicole Garcia and German actress Barbara Sukowa. Others on the panel are U.S. director Jonathan Demme, Italian helmer Mario Martone, Indian scribe Arundhati Roy and French writer Patrick Modiano.\u003cbr/\u003eGILLES JACOB, the festival's longtime programmer, said the paucity of U.S. films was due in part to American studios not wanting to release the ones that were up to quality. He also cited the increase in Hollywood's split rights deals, which often results in disagreements with foreign partners over the merits of sending a film to Cannes.\u003cbr/\u003eA total 1,397 titles were viewed this year, of which 681 were feature-length films ; an increase of 23% on last year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe opening night gala will kick off with a non-competition screening of ROLAND JOFFE'S French-financed, English language feature, \"Vatel\", a costume drama starring GERARD DEPARDIEU and UMA THURMAN.\u003cbr/\u003eThe closing night film is Canadian director, DENYS ARCAND'S \"Stardom\"a satire about celebrity.\u003cbr/\u003eUn Certain Regard opens this year with \"Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her,\" the Sundance-preemed first film of Rodrigo Garcia, the son of Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
