Usually on the border towns they raise the prices to compensate for the drop.  So they still make their profit.\u003cbr/\u003eOf course, it's really hard on the people that live here, because then they have to pay higher prices.  But we found boots that would normally be $130 in the states for $50.  So, you can't beat that.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Cameron Ellegaard\u003cbr/\u003e                                 U.S. Consumer\u003cbr/\u003eMexican merchants were happy to see more customers...and anxious to make American money.  \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, they were also sympathetic to countrymen who are suffering the ill effects of the peso devaluation.\u003cbr/\u003eWe make dollars.  So, we buy everything that way.  We pay in dollars, also, we make dollars.  But for the people this affects, are people that make Mexican money.  Some people in the factories make about 150 new pesos.  Now you can make only 75.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Luis Moreno\u003cbr/\u003e                               Mexican businessman\u003cbr/\u003eBusinessmen on the other side of the border may be the biggest losers as a result of the peso's slide.  \u003cbr/\u003e2.8 billion dollars in Mexican wages cross the border every year to buy U.S. products.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnother 2 billion dollars is spent in Mexico on American imports,  but those numbers are likely to fall.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen you look at San Diego goods or U.S. goods in general that are exported to Mexico, we have been at a competitive advantage relative to Mexican goods.  That advantage took place as a result of NAFTA or Mexico reducing its tariff rates on our goods.  All of a sudden with a 40% price increase on American goods you've lost that advantage. That we in the border region are able to work on collaberative models that unite our economies so that we can compete globally, and that's a long-term issue.
