Now that we have seen the subsidence factors that we have had, the storms, such as Katrina and Gustav and Ike, the high water levels that we are seeing, the sea level rise this area has sank quite a bit. We have lost probably three or four feet of that elevation since 1920 which has left these grave sites somewhat in the mud most of them are under water and left families without a place to come and keep burying their loved ones where the families once were but also to visit their loved ones at the graves that are still here.\"\u003cbr/\u003e3. Much of the damage has been caused by oil exploration and the erosion is being accelerated by storms such as Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac.\u003cbr/\u003eLeeville cemetery on the south eastern coast of Louisiana in the United States has been a burial site since the late 1800s.\u003cbr/\u003eSome headstones are barely visible above the water, and waves lap at the bricks and concrete surrounding the burial caskets. \u003cbr/\u003eAs recently as 1920, the cemetery was several feet above sea level, surrounded by bountiful orange groves, cotton fields and cattle farms. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the ground has subsided to barely sea level, and during Hurricane Isaac, about seven feet (2 metres) of land washed away in the tidal surge. \u003cbr/\u003eIn less than 10 years, the US state of Louisiana has lost an estimated 25 feet (7.62metres) of coastline. \u003cbr/\u003eSince 2005 at least two dozen cemeteries have started to sink or been washed away because of erosion and subsidence that's been accelerated by  powerful storms such as Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike, Lee and Isaac.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a coast wide problem you know we saw there in Hurricane Isaac with the Braithwaite community in Blakeman's parish there upwards of 300 graves that were inundated with water and caskets that popped up  were spread all over the highway,\" says Archie Chaisson, coastal zone manager for Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, USA.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Leeville Cemetery is now only accessible by boat.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the gravestones in Lafitte date back to the early 1800s when the town's namesake, Jean Lafitte used the bayous (marshes) for smuggling.   \u003cbr/\u003eIn nearby Cheniere Caminada Cemetery, Louisiana, USA the skeleton of a tree that has died is symbolic of the dead buried there. \u003cbr/\u003eSaltwater from the Gulf of Mexico has killed the trees and most of the marsh grass, causing the land to sink.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We did not bury people in marshes, we buried them on high ground, this was high ground and now it has subsided to the point of being wetlands and open water,\" says Windell Curole, general manager of the South Lafourche Levee District, Louisiana, USA\u003cbr/\u003eLevees (embankments) as high as 16 feet have been built to try to keep the communities from flooding during the recent storms, but the areas outside the levee protection system where many of the cemeteries were built are being washed away.\u003cbr/\u003eSome relatives of the dead have tried pouring concrete slabs to build up the burial sites and hold headstones in place. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring Hurricane Isaac in 2012, dozens of caskets floated out of graves and were deposited in gardens and on roads\u003cbr/\u003eIn some cases, human remains became separated from their caskets. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mayor of the town of Lafitte Timothy Kerner, has photographs of the recovery of the caskets and says it is an horrible experience for the relatives of the dead.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Kerner says Louisiana's coastal erosion problems started in the 1930s with the cutting and dredging of canals for oil and gas exploration, which allowed saltwater to work its way into freshwater marshes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe damming of the Mississippi River in the early 1900s also prevented the river from re-depositing freshwater sediment. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't know how, how can we continue and how the people can continue suffering over and over again.\" says Mr Kerner, \"I know the only answer is to get a levee, a levee system. I think it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel but it is not an easy thing.\"   \u003cbr/\u003eHowever there is is very little to be done to save what remains of Leeville Cemetery,
