Close underwater of Tati swimming \u003cbr/\u003eDeep water can be absolutely terrifying, even for the most competent swimmer, but if you have a phobia about water it can ruin your family holiday.\u003cbr/\u003eApart from the seaside, many resorts focus their entertainment on water parks and rides, so if you're not willing to poke your toe in the water you might find yourself sitting on the sidelines.\u003cbr/\u003eIf you can force yourself to take a dip, you're just a step away from taking the plunge.\u003cbr/\u003eLeyla Tati has been scared of water since she was just thirteen years old.\u003cbr/\u003eHer story is a common one for aquaphobics.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was learning to swim when a friend pushed her into the deep end of  a pool.\u003cbr/\u003eTati says she nearly died that day.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has taken her years to return to the poolside.\u003cbr/\u003eHer experience as a teenager hasn't faded.\u003cbr/\u003eEach time she touches the water the fear which controls her seizes her body.\u003cbr/\u003eMomentarily she freezes.\u003cbr/\u003eTati says \"I feel like I'm going to die. I feel like something really bad is going to happen to me and I don't want to even touch the water, even when I (have a) shower, I'm terrified of all the water and all that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor a year Tati has been coming here to the UK Academy of Swimming.\u003cbr/\u003eHer instructor, Mike Burman, says when an aquaphobic actually makes the decision to come to the pool, it's a landmark decision, one of the first which allows them to begin to conquer their fear. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter some hesitation Tati finally steps down into the pool, tightly clutching the handrail.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Burman all swimmers have a healthy respect of the water, not least the sea with its powerful currents.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he says it's  different when a fear of the situation is out of proportion to the danger posed by the water and it's can't be explained, or reasoned away, \u003cbr/\u003eHe believes that's when caution becomes a phobia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Academy has been running for ten years and Burman claims he has seen hundreds of aquaphobics become competent in the water.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"as these children are growing up the fear gets larger and larger. They've had a very bad experience and the longer they leave it the bigger the fear gets. So by the time they reach adulthood, in a lot of cases, there's a complete avoidance of water altogether. Some of the swimmers even say they don't like splashing water on their faces, even having baths can be traumatic and it can become that ingrained and that entrenched as a phobia.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBurman says many of his clients turn up here when they realise that their own phobia is having a detrimental impact on their families.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because people some who lack confidence with swimming tend to avoid these pastimes, in turn their children grow up lacking confidence in the water.\u003cbr/\u003eBurman gets into the water with his clients and he waits as they decide whether they're going to let go of the handrail. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce they're in the water each step is taken slowly.\u003cbr/\u003eTati quickly relaxes and builds up her confidence.\u003cbr/\u003eBurman says \"we teach them how to exhale into the water properly, lift their heads slowly and breathe and a lot of people who are scared of water go very tense and the one thing you need from swimming is to relax.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"it's teaching them that they're safe, teaching them that they can relax and also teaching them how to float and once, the most fundamental thing is teaching them to stand up, once a swimmer knows how to stand up safely their confidence just grows.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAcross the other side of the pool's shallow end is Tati's youngest child, 9 year old Amy.\u003cbr/\u003eShe's well on her way to becoming a confident swimmer.\u003cbr/\u003eTati was determined her three daughters wouldn't experience her problems.\u003cbr/\u003eShe ensured they all learned to swim at a young age.\u003cbr/\u003eHer husband's a keen swimmer too. \u003cbr/\u003eIt'll soon be holiday time for the family.\u003cbr/\u003eNormally Tati is already feeling anxious, but this year is different. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's itching to go.\u003cbr/\u003eTati says \"we're going to go two weeks, two weeks we're going to go to Albania, one week we're going to Greece and I'm really looking forward to it. This is going to be the first holiday for myself and my family that I'm going to be able to swim.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Campbells come swimming here with their children every week.\u003cbr/\u003eThey can all hold their own in the water, but it wasn't always the case for their son Zachary.\u003cbr/\u003eZachary is a high functioning autistic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe noise and space of a pool took a long and gradual adjustment, but watching him now it's clear that the perseverance has paid off.\u003cbr/\u003eCampbell says \"he just wouldn't even get into the pool, but slowly and surely over the years he's sat by the side and now he's really confident and he really enjoys being in the pool and he now participates  in the main classes rather than having his own private tuition.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTati
