Pinochet doesn't deserve immunity because of the nature of the crimes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Isabel Allende, daughter of former president Salvador Allende\u003cbr/\u003eLegal experts fighting for the extradition were also confident that the law was on their side. \u003cbr/\u003eThe prosecutors are attempting to cast doubt on whether Pinochet was actually head of state throughout his rule, particularly in the first violent hours after the coup and whether international law now calls for anyone accused of genocide, torture and kidnapping to face a court.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Firstly, immunity does not exist as far as crimes by heads of state are concerned. Secondly, these crimes can be tried before national tribunals, as quoted in the Geneva Convention where it specifically says that these crimes can be tried before national and not international tribunals. Thirdly, the legal process makes it very clear that the UK has no obligation to try Pinochet, but the UK does have the duty to hand him over to Spain.
