Tracking shot of man driving mobile cupcake costume \u003cbr/\u003eTechnology lovers have been showing off their inventions at one of San Francisco Bay Area's most \"electric\" events.\u003cbr/\u003eEnthusiasts and robots rubbed shoulders as the inventors revealed their designs.\u003cbr/\u003eSome guitars really are electric - especially this one, which a musician plays while wearing a metal suit and being struck by simulated lightning at the Maker Faire in San Mateo, California.  \u003cbr/\u003eStarted in 2006, the Maker Faire offers a place for the \"tinkerer\" to compare notes with the professional technologists - and have fun in the process.  \u003cbr/\u003eUnusual demonstrations and inventive objects spark the imagination and encourage the fair attendees to think about how they can improve the electronics they may already have at home. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd all sorts of robots - from those displaying human attributes to those exhibiting useful skills - roll through the fair and mingle with the attendees.  \u003cbr/\u003eEven Microsoft's robotics team is impressed by the work of high-end hobbyists.\u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft has created a software platform offered along with a hardware platform that lets enthusiasts build their own robots, some of which are on display.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut they also parade some of their own creations, including a self-balancing model that runs with the help of an accelerometer in the base.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother catches the eye - and captures the image - of younger attendees; the party photographer robot takes pictures and uploads them to Flickr.\u003cbr/\u003eLoke Uei Ten, Senior Technical Product Manager for Microsoft Robotics, explains this means \"you don't need a photographer anymore at your party or wedding, you can just use a robot.\" \u003cbr/\u003eFrom flashing neon animal sculptures to a light-up dance-floor, there's no shortage of inventive creations to spark interest over the two-day festival.  \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Cox, a Rover Engineer with the Northern California Chapter of the Mars Society, says his group is interested in simulating mars explorations. They've built remote control vehicles that record images and send back video over a WIFI connection. Cox says going forward the group hopes to make its robots more autonomous.\u003cbr/\u003ePeter Goldie, who attended the fair with his son Aaron, enjoys talking with people about how to make things. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Everyone, both the attendees and everyone here kind of tinkers with stuff and knows about stuff and it was really neat to have everyone just tell you: 'well here's how you can build this at home'.
