Missile-carrying nuclear submarines of the Soviet Pacific fleet were built, maintained and eventually recycled here at two\u003cbr/\u003eplants called \"Vostok\" and \"Zvezda\".\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Bplshoy Kamen has now lost its privileged status and after the break-up of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold war, both facilities, which have provided jobs for nearly two thirds of the 15,000 population, have ground to a halt. Along with the economic problems have come environmental ones. The aging storage and processing facilities could not cope with the tons of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) produced by the many nuclear-powered vessels of the Pacific fleet. Shortage of funds to develop new technologies or even to mantain old equipment led to dangerous measures. Waste was dumped secretly into the Sea of Japan, until an international scandal broke out in 1994, when\u003cbr/\u003eJapanese environmentalists discovered it. Shortly after that, the construction began in Bolshoy Kamen of a floating LRW processing facility, based on US technology and sponsored by the Japanese government. Today the work on what workers of \"Vostok\" call \"The Barge\" is nearly completed. In the last two years it has secured jobs for many local residents.
