And it asserts that the CIA lied about the covert program to officials at the White House, the Justice Department and congressional oversight committees.\u003cbr/\u003eEarnest said that regardless of whether the U.S. gleaned important intelligence through the interrogations, \"the president believes that the use of those tactics was unwarranted, that they were inconsistent with our values and did not make us safer.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the White House has said it welcomes the release of the summary, officials say they do have concerns about potential security threats that could follow.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, Earnest said that the U.S. didn't have information about the private negotiations a South African aid group said were underway to secure the release of a South African hostage before he died in a U.S. raid on al-Qaida militants in Yemen.\u003cbr/\u003eQuestions have been raised about what officials of various governments knew, if anything, about efforts to release South African Pierre Korkie, who was said to be close to being freed even as another hostage with him, American Luke Somers, appeared to face imminent execution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two men were killed Saturday during a U.S.-led rescue attempt. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We obviously mourn the death of Mr. Korkie in the same way that we mourn the death of Mr. Somers,\" he told reporters in Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the raid in Yemen, although unsuccessful, should be seen by militants \"as a clear sign of these president's resolve to do everything possible to rescue Americans who are being held hostage anywhere around the globe.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWashington, DC - 8 December 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
