Tight of pigs \u003cbr/\u003eThe Philippine Bio Sciences Company (PhilBIO) has pioneered the technology of trapping natural methane gas emission from pig manure to generate electricity.\u003cbr/\u003eRealising the potential of a viable alternative to the traditional source of energy, some pig farms in the Philippine are switching to this alternative electricity generation process.\u003cbr/\u003ePhilippine Bio Sciences Company specialises in biogas and waste water treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe concept behind it is actually very simple, as explained by PhilBIO technical assistant, Marecjub Lasaga.\u003cbr/\u003e\"From the pig pens the pig wastes, through gravity goes to this bio-digester, methane is trapped, and that is the methane that will run the generator set,\" Lasaga told AP Television. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pig waste is collected in a lagoon or bio-digester which is covered with a large canvas, this traps the methane. \u003cbr/\u003ePipes which surface from under the canvas and take the methane to its storage area. \u003cbr/\u003eThis farm in particular now relies solely on methane to power their generator, which in turn powers hundred percent of their electricity needs.\u003cbr/\u003eAside from generating their own power, the use of the biogas facility adds another benefit in the form of waste-water treatment, which is a requirement of the government's Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for a farm to be certified as environmentally compliant.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We can give two ways benefits to the farm. First one is the free electricity that can (be) generated from the biogas and then the second one is the environmental compliance with the DENR because of the waste water treatment,\" PhilBIO marketing assistant, Leean Aquino said.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat comes out of the bio-digester, after methane is extracted, is water that is stripped of naturally occurring greenhouse gases and eighty percent of organic pollutants. Residual water can even be used for fertilising or flushing.\u003cbr/\u003eEven if the captured methane is simply burned off with a flare, the result is more environmentally friendly than letting the gas drift into the atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists favour farm-based methane production because of it efficient recycle which transforms a series of waste products into useful new Development Mechanism (CDM). \u003cbr/\u003eCDM is one of the arrangements under the Kyoto Protocol allowing industrialised countries with a greenhouse gas reduction commitment to invest in emission reducing projects in developing countries as an alternative to what is generally considered more costly emission reductions in their own countries. \u003cbr/\u003eCarbon Emission Reduction (CER) credits will be issued based on emission reductions achieved by the project activities or what is called \"carbon trading.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA farm with 5-thousand heads for example can potentially get 2,500 CER credits in a year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe credits then serve as an additional income for the one who put up the biogas facility.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
