Of course I use the term 'relatively' because mining anything on the moon is not simple. You've got to get there which we know is not simple, and so if you have oxygen, depending on the process you're using, one of the processes when you reduce this ilmenite mineral you make water. So water comes off, and of course that has very obvious uses for human consumption, then you can further break down that water into hydrogen and oxygen, you can use hydrogen and oxygen later to power fuel cells, make electricity or to make rocket fuel to power rockets.\"\u003cbr/\u003e4. The glasses in the soils and some cases are abundant in oxygen. All rocks contain abundant oxygen, but the ones that are most easily liberated are what we're after. So Hubble's high precision instruments in the ultraviolet and the visible and its high-spacial resolution basically resolving power of a hockey rink from Earth orbit, is what allowed this to happen.\"\u003cbr/\u003e6. Animation showing moon surface and ultraviolet images (MUTE)\u003cbr/\u003eNASA officials said on Wednesday that they were using the unique capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope for new scientific observations of the Earth's moon.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA said Hubble's resolution and sensitivity to ultraviolet light had allowed the telescope to search for important oxygen-bearing minerals on the moon.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the moon does not have a breathable atmosphere, minerals, such as ilmenite (titanium and iron oxide), may be critical for a sustained human lunar presence. \u003cbr/\u003eIlmenite is a potential source of oxygen for breathing or to power rockets.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said the new Hubble observations were the first high-resolution, ultraviolet images ever acquired of the moon. The images provide scientists with a new tool to study mineral variations within the lunar crust.\u003cbr/\u003eAs NASA plans future expeditions to the moon, such data, in combination with other measurements, will help ensure the most valuable sites are targeted for robotic and human missions.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists said Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys photographed ultraviolet and visible light images of known geologically diverse areas on the side of the moon nearest Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eThese included the Aristarchus impact crater and the adjacent Schroter's Valley.\u003cbr/\u003eHubble also photographed the Apollo 15 and 17 landing sites, where astronauts collected rock and soil samples in 1971 and 1972.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists are comparing the properties of the rock and soil samples from the Apollo sites with the new Hubble images, and the Aristarchus region, which neither humans nor robotic spacecraft have visited.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA said the Hubble observations of Aristarchus crater and Schroter's Valley will help refine researchers' understanding of the diverse, scientifically interesting materials in the region and to unravel their
