Douste-Blazy leaving\u003cbr/\u003eFifteen French and British tourists were reportedly kidnapped in the remote desert of northern Ethiopia, one of the hottest and most inhospitable areas in the world, businessmen in the region and a diplomat said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe French Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday that Western tourists have been kidnapped in Ethiopia, but declined to say how many or indicate their nationalities.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It appears that Western tourists would have been kidnapped in the North of Ethiopia,\" Foreign minister Philippe Douste-Blazy told media.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At this stage, we have no certainty neither on the number or the nationality of the people kidnapped, even though several information lead us to think that there are French among them,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group was in a convoy of four vehicles in Dalol, 800 kilometres (500 miles) northeast of Addis Ababa, travelling to salt mines in the Afar region, when they were kidnapped on Thursday, a businessman and a tour operator who work in the area said. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth spoke on condition of anonymity because of the issue's sensitivity.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of those kidnapped was Rossanna Moore, wife of Michael Moore, director of the British Council in Ethiopia, according to a diplomat who also spoke on condition of anonymity. Michael Moore refused to comment when reached Friday by The Associated Press.\u003cbr/\u003eA British Foreign Office spokesman said officials were aware that a number of Western nationals were reported missing in northeastern Ethiopia. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said British Embassy staff were checking with Ethiopian officials.\u003cbr/\u003eEthiopia's government spokesman, Zemedkun Tekle, said officials were struggling to confirm the reports because the region is so remote. \u003cbr/\u003eFrench Embassy officials were en route to the area Friday.      \u003cbr/\u003eBandits and a small Afar rebel group operate in the area the tourists visited, which is known for its difficult terrain and has an average annual temperature of 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34 Celsius), but it often gets much hotter. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government requires all convoys to have a minimum of two cars and always travel with armed guards.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tourists travelled with two armed police and an Afar guide, the tour operator said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1995, rebels from the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front acknowledged kidnapping Italian tourists in the region. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ARDUF has been fighting for years against Ethiopia and Eritrea over lands inhabited by ethnic Afar. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tour operator said the tourists were clients of Origins Ethiopia, a new tour agency specialising in Afar, and company officials told him that they have been unable to contact the tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eOrigins Ethiopia officials did not immediately provide comment.       \u003cbr/\u003eThey left Mekele on Sunday for a two-day drive to Hamedali, a remote village that is the last staging post before visiting the salt lakes, the operator said.\u003cbr/\u003eThen they
