sport.\u003cbr/\u003eCovered in fake blood and with banderillas (bullfighting spears) in their backs, protesters lay inert in the glaring sunshine to highlight the suffering of bulls.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were surrounded by more protesters, who were holding placards and banners against bullfighting.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Mexico says no more to bullfights,\" announced one female protester, who was sitting on the ground with closely packed bodies of protesters lying behind her.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protest was organised by AnimaNaturalis, an international activist group which promotes animal rights. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael Arriola, anti-bullfighting protester and spokesperson for AnimaNaturalis in Mexico, criticises the practice of bullfighting not only on grounds of cruelty, but also because he feels the sport promotes negative values.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It promotes negative values in society, like violence, indifference to someone else's suffering, abuse of power and insensitivity,\" said Arriola. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It doesn't offer anything good to our country, you see how we are afflicted by a crisis of violence.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnimaNaturalis say that the sport claims the lives of around 9 thousand bulls and 400 horses each year.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the mistreatment of animals being considered an offence under city regulations, bullfighting is
