Morrison, Aerospace Engineer\u003cbr/\u003eThe modern history of adoption began in the aftermath of the Korean War.\u003cbr/\u003eAll of the conference attendees shared the fact that they were adopted out of Korea and many of them were the abandoned children of U-S servicemen and Korean women.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen a Oregon lumber man, Harry Holt and his wife Bertha first saw a documentary about the plight of children born to Korean mothers and foreign fathers, they knew they had to act.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the time of the documentary the adoptees were successfully petitioning to change the adoption law but in desperate need of help the Holts adopted eight children before setting up an organisation that remains now.\u003cbr/\u003eThe adoptees were raised in the 1950s and 1960s before there were books explaining adoption and before special culture camps helped kids born in foreign lands to connect with each other.\u003cbr/\u003eThrough the Holt International Children Services, Susan Soon-keum Cox was adopted by an American family in the aftermath of the Korean War.\u003cbr/\u003eBeing the only Asian in her small town, she longed to join with others who shared a similar fate and swap stories of growing up in a time when international adoptions became accepted and even popular.\u003cbr/\u003eCox who is the Chief organiser of the conference, says the reaction from people attending has been overwhelming.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I received an e-mail from a woman who lived in Indiana, I don't remember her name, but she said I have waited all my life for this, I have never met another Korean adoptee.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Susan Soon-keum Cox, Organiser\u003cbr/\u003eA survey of the conference attendees highlighted some of the common problems they faced.\u003cbr/\u003eJoy Lieberthal, herself a 29 year old adoptee who was raised in New York state, helped put the survey results together.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said the biggest problem faced was racial discrimination.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was so pervasive. As adoptee I experienced it, but I didn't realise it was so universal.
