Animated comic and closing Shujaaz title
Millions of young Africans are finally getting their voice heard with a new youth culture brand from Kenya.
Shujaaz, meaning 'heroes', speaks for the 27 million people, 73% of Kenya's population, aged under 30.
Shujaaz! For the young people of Kenya, Shujaaz is a mirror on their own culture and aspirations.
Encompassing everything from animated cartoons, to a comic book, an online community and a daily FM radio show, Shujaaz is a brand that says it all.
27 million people, 73% of Kenya's population, are aged under 30 - and Shujaaz is designed to be their voice in the world.
Shujaaz, meaning 'heroes' in Kenya's Kiswahili language, aims to empower young people to be heroes in their own communities.
It is the inspiration of Well Told Story, a Nairobi-based communications company.
Director Rob Burnett explains how Shujaaz came about, from the demand of an entire generation of previously ignored young Kenyans.
"We thought there was a gap and an opportunity and a need to develop new some new kinds of youth-focused media in the public interest to deliver bright ideas and inspiration and motivation to 20 million, 25 million young Kenyans who need a chance."
Shujaaz is supported by commercial sponsors and development agencies keen to get useful messages out to young people, in a ways that are exciting and motivating. The demand is there, says Rob Burnett:
"Half the population of Kenya is aged under 18, two thirds of the population is aged under 30. There is a huge demand for information and ideas and inspiration for young people who are facing unemployment, uncertain future, who can't now rely on the systems to deliver opportunities to them, but who need to go out and make their own futures."
Since it launched in February 2010 the growth of Shujaaz's audience of readers and listeners has been phenomenal.
A monthly print run of 600,000 copies is given free with The Daily Nation newspaper and across the country at Safaricom m-pesa (a mobile-based money transfer agents). The Shujaaz comic is already Kenya's most widely distributed publication.
Studies show that an average of ten people read each issue, meaning the comic already reaches around 6 million people.
Artwork for the comic is overseen by Art Producer Fatima Aly Jaffer - from the pencil drawings at storyboarding stage to completion.
Fatima explains how they match the art with the stories:
"When a story comes to me I have to sit with each artist, go through it and then we storyboard it and see how that particular character can tell that story visually, so that we are true to the character, because we have very well defined characters. We have our playful characters, we have our more serious characters."
The comic portrays the lives of four 'ordinary' young people, from different walks of Kenyan society, the idea being that everyone will be able to emphasise closely with at least one character.
There's Maria Kim, a fighter for justice in her city slum, Malkia, a rebellious teenager living on the country's coast and Charlie Pele, a farmer's son from rural Kenya who's mad about soccer,
Breathing life into the comic is the radio show, broadcast daily across 22 leading Kenyan FM stations, following the stories set out in the comic.
Presented by a young artist who voices DJ Boyie, one of the fictional characters from the comic - whose real identity must remain a secret, to keep the magic alive.
Other media channels are also integral to Shujaaz - creating as many channels as possible through which the audience can engage with the Shujaaz world and the stories.
With over 7,000 fans on Facebook alone - the web community further blurs the boundary between fiction and reality.
Typical stories combine adventure with information - simple ways to make money, rearing chickens, growing spinach, to microfinance in the slums and engaging with government.
In a patriarchal society where elders rule and youngsters keep quiet - Shujaaz encourages young people to stand up to adults exploiting them or ignoring them, and to have a voice and say in how their neighbourhoods are run.
It is also breaking new ground in language. It is written in Sheng, a slang born in Nairobi's slums, which is rapidly becoming the new language for modern day Kenya's entire under-30 age group.
Shujaaz is believed to be the first ever to turn this spoken vernacular into the written word. A challenging task given that it is evolving day by day, says Rob Burnett:
"The challenge of course is that Sheng is not a formal language and it exists differently wherever you go around the country. And so it has been a challenge to figure out how do we put Sheng on paper, sometimes for the first time, and make sure that everyone can understand it."
The appetite and awareness for Shujaaz is growing - more radio stations are wanting to air the show and more comics will have to be circulated each month to keep up with demand.
For others, Shujaaz success is more obvious, people call in or chat on Facebook and Twitter about how they have tried ideas out and whether they are working.
But, as writer Paul Peter Kades can testify, success can also be monitored in a more instantaneous way:
"I've walked in the streets of Nairobi and the adjacent environments and I'll tell you, when the comic books hits the streets on the day of distribution, you will find all ages reading the comic. You will even find people smiling alone as they read the comic and that tells you people love it."
What Shujaaz delivers to the Kenyan audience is equally relevant in neighbouring East African countries. So they are looking into possible rollouts into Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia.

<div class='action-container flex
