Various of injured surrounded by medical personnel\u003cbr/\u003eA roadside bomb blamed on Tamil Tiger separatists tore through a passenger bus crowded with civilians in northern Sri Lanka, killing 16 people and wounding 22 others, the military said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bus had been heading north from the agricultural town of Kabithigollewa near rebel-held territory when it was hit by the blast about 19:45 (14:15GMT) a military spokesman said.\u003cbr/\u003eEvening buses in the area are often crowded with farmers returning from a market in the town.\u003cbr/\u003eThe road near the blast site was sealed off after the bombing and a military search for the attackers began almost immediately, witnesses said. \u003cbr/\u003eA string of ambulances ferried the wounded to the hospital in the nearby town of Anuradhapura. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least 16 people were killed and 22 injured, the military said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attackers carried out the assault despite a major security crackdown that came in response to two bombings last week that killed 20 people in the area of the capital, Colombo. \u003cbr/\u003eThose attacks, blamed on the Tamil Tigers, followed a renewed military offensive against the rebels in their home base in the north. \u003cbr/\u003eThe drive has killed hundreds of the guerrillas in recent weeks, the military said.\u003cbr/\u003eA similar bus attack in the same area as Wednesday night's blast killed 64 people last year and provoked a wide-scale military retaliation against the rebels.\u003cbr/\u003eRebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not immediately be reached for comment on the bus explosion. \u003cbr/\u003eThe military said it was certain the rebels, formally known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), were responsible \u003cbr/\u003eIn the latest fighting, soldiers and rebels fought across Sri Lanka's northern jungles in a series of attacks that killed 29 rebels and seven soldiers, the military said.\u003cbr/\u003eIlanthirayan, the rebel spokesman, has disputed the military's casualty figures in recent days. \u003cbr/\u003eEach side routinely exaggerates the other's casualty numbers and plays down its own, and an independent confirmation of tolls is unavailable due to restricted access to the conflict zone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rebels have been fighting since 1983 for an independent homeland for minority ethnic Tamils in the north and east following decades of discrimination under governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 70-thousand people have died in the conflict.\u003cbr/\u003eA 2002 cease-fire fell apart over the past two years.\u003cbr/\u003eSenior military officials have called for a full-scale offensive in the north to force the rebels from their de facto state there, and
