and August 20, five hundred and fifty fires  burned down 3.368 hectares in Catalonia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe situation has been aggravated by the drought that has affected much of Spain, leaving some water reservoirs at less than 20% capacity.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery summer forest fires destroy huge areas of wood and scrubland in rural districts in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eSpanish ministry figures indicate that the number of fires across Spain that have burned more than 2.5 acres, that's a drop more than 6,200 in 2005 to under 3,000 in 2006 for the January-July period. \u003cbr/\u003eFires charred 88,635 acres, down from 233,370 acres in 2005, the ministry added.  \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities attribute the drop to preventive measures, including banning barbecues in the countryside in dry regions, and more effective campaigns to clear roadside garbage and forests of fallen leaves and branches.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the fires are now extinguished almost instantly, by local firefighting teams on standby around the clock, who are helped by volunteers. \u003cbr/\u003eEdgar Nebot is the regional chief of fire fighters in the area of Macanet near Girona, eighty miles (129 kilometres) north of Barcelona. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says local residents need to be educated about the natural cycle of fires and the best way to deal with them. \u003cbr/\u003eNebot says that good planning is needed in order to determine the most efficient way to tackle fires.\u003cbr/\u003eOften burnt areas are repopulated with alien tree species.\u003cbr/\u003eBut local environmentalists complain that the introduction of this \"foreign\" species alters the delicately balanced eco-system of  a region that has a large variety of vegetal and animal species. \u003cbr/\u003eJosep Teixidor, the local secretary of environment for Lloret de Mar council, says that the hills near the tourist resort of Lloret de Mar were re-populated with eucalyptus after a devastating fire, which resulted in the loss of many species native to the area that couldn't co-exist with the alien species. \u003cbr/\u003eAna Rosa Martinez is Greenpeace's spokesperson for Catalonia. \u003cbr/\u003eMartinez says that sometimes fires mean that nothing will grow again in that area in the immediate future. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Joan Real, a forestry engineer who teaches and conducts numerous investigations on wood environment, says that such views are extreme. \u003cbr/\u003eReal says that fires are an inherent part of the cycle of life of mediterranean forests, and have been for centuries. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has formed an independent ecologist organisation called \"Aguila Perdiguera\" aimed at protecting Catalan's woods.\u003cbr/\u003eThere had been suggestions that some of the fires were started on purpose, perhaps by property developers. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever one real estate developer, Wilhelm Boerhof, says that the risk of fires puts potential second home owners off buying houses in the hills of Catalonia.  \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Catalan authorities, 52.88% of the fires are a result of human activity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe good news is that the number of fires has decreased 29% compared to last year's figures. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Catalan government is currently involved in the financing of numerous projects that include the creation of \"forest halls\" -  treeless areas
