Enamel is painted onto these cells that create divisions preventing the colours from merging. The work is fired in kilns after the enamel has been applied and this technique is known as Yussen Shippo."
While the wires become an integral part of the finished look they also prevent the molten enamel from flowing into an adjoining part of the design during the firing process.
The cells created by the wires are known as cloisons in French, hence the name given to the enamel ware, cloisonne.
Towards the end of the 19th century individual craftsman and companies were producing Shippo Yaki or Japanese cloisonne in several parts of the country.
But the art is slowly dying out.
"In Japan the cloisonne industry has almost disappeared. Kyoto Shippo (cloisonne) that flourished during the late 19th and early 20th century has been lost. The only area where the craft is still being practiced is the Shippo district in Aichi Prefecture," explains Mutoh.
Founded in 1880 by Ando Jubei, Ando Shippo Ten company is now run by his great grandson Ando Juro.
Unlike all other Japanese Cloisonne producers of the 19th century Ando Shippo Ten is the only company to have survived.
Indeed without the company the industry would now in all probability have been reduced to a handful of isolated craftsmen and museums.
This has been the fate of many traditional Japanese crafts.
By contrast, the Ando company currently has 147 full time employees on salary.
In addition to full time staff the company also out sources to and consequently supports just under 50 independent craftsmen working in the area.
"My family founded the company in 1880 but from the early 17th century they had been chemists selling medical supplies in central Nagoya. In 1880 they began cloisonne production and the business has been running ever since. We are now in our 130th year," says Juro.
The reason why this company has survived and with it generations of accumulated knowledge and skill, may lie in the company''s structure and management policy.
Of the 147 full time employees only 10 are actually craftsmen with an additional 3 designers.
The majority of the employees work in sales and marketing.
Selection of the kind of items produced is also essential to the company''s strategy. As Ando Juro explains, items produced are a compromise between extremely high quality work that engages all the craftsman''s skill and less labour intensive work with a comparatively high market return.
"This is a business and as such we have to make a profit. We''re not working as volunteers. So we can''t simply make the kind of pieces that craftsmen want to make all the time. Sometimes we have to make items that the craftsmen themselves might think are questionable, but from the revenue generated by these items we are able to finance the kind of work that the craftsmen want to make. So doing we are able to preserve the traditional industry. I think you have to do this," he says.
Through maintaining this balance it appears that a craft that has been relegated to museum status in other parts of the country is still thriving.
Clients are reminded:
(i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
(ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service
(iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
AP Television
The Namikawa Cloisonne Museum of Kyoto, 16th September 2009
1.
