Shot of crowd waiting outside \u003cbr/\u003eCarson Daly chatted with Eminem, Beyonce gave a show-stopping performance, girls shrieked at the sight of Justin Timberlake and hundreds of fans lined up outside Times Square for a glimpse at the superstars.\u003cbr/\u003eFor a few hours, it seemed like old times at MTV's 'Total Request Live', back when the show was not only one of music's most powerful forces, but a dominant part of pop culture. \u003cbr/\u003eUnfortunately, it's the show's demise that's made it news this time. \u003cbr/\u003eMTV pulled the plug on the show on Sunday night (16 Nov 2008) following years of declining ratings.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it went out with a bang, as some of its biggest stars came to pay respects to the vehicle that helped launch many of their careers during a live, three-hour broadcast from the show's headquarters, in the heart of Times Square in New York City.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a bittersweet moment,\" Diddy, the show's most frequent guest, said as he cried mock tears and gave one of the final waves to the Times Square audience from its glass-encased studios above.\u003cbr/\u003eMTV has had other shows that will be remembered for changing the musical landscape, including \"Yo! MTV Raps,\" but perhaps none greater than \"TRL.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt made its debut in 1998, just as the teen pop phenomenon was about to explode, when the rap-rock hybrid was bubbling over, and group's like Destiny's Child were considered emerging acts. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile its concept of a video countdown show wasn't new, its model - which included a live show, an audience full of fans and viewer feedback -  helped energise the teen fan base and made them music's taste makers. \u003cbr/\u003eSoon, it would become an integral part of launching or boosting the careers of superstars like Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, Eminem and Christina Aguilera. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's no coincidence that their biggest sales, and pop's huge sales boom in the new millennium, came as the show skyrocketed in ratings.\u003cbr/\u003eRapper, 50 cent said the axing of the show was a big loss. \"The other formats are great too, but this is absolutely the biggest one, so having it go away is definitely going to change the focus. I mean if we don't have 'Rap City' (BET) or 'TRL' to actually promote the music, then I'm not spending any money on music videos anymore.  I'll be making what's more cost efficient and to place it within the Web during my entire next run; my marketing strategy will change completely,\" he said\u003cbr/\u003eIn its prime, 'TRL' had American Idol like power to effect sales on the pop charts, and became a required stop, not only for those on the road to pop stardom, but also those in TV, the movie realm and even sports superstars. \u003cbr/\u003eTom Cruise and Will Smith appeared; all-star athletes like Derek Jeter would stop by to mingle; even pop icons like Madonna and Michael Jackson made sure they got face time on MTV.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in the days after the 9/11 terror attacks,  New York City Mayo for the first direct sequel in the spy franchise appeared on the show to soothe fears of the youth during those bewildering moments.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was the day we really realised that 'TRL' was really special,\" recalled Daly.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
