This was the first time that the state has given this kind of designation to a coastal community like ours and we intend to preserve the village's character."
21. Wide of funaya
Ine Cho is a small village that lies in a bay on the Tango Peninsular in Japan's Kyoto Prefecture.
The village is characterised by a distinctive style of architecture known as funaya or boat houses.
Around 230 funaya or boat houses line the perimeter of Ine Bay.
Chihara Hisato is an architectural joiner, and life long resident of the village.
For 3 generations, his family has renovated and rebuilt the houses that line the bay.
He explains that the style of architecture that developed in the village around the turn of the 17th century was a response to the area's topography.
Hisator says "there is only a very thin strip of habitable land between the ocean and the mountains that surround the bay. The style developed as a result of generations of inhabitants adapting to living in this location."
This meant that inhabitants had to maximize the use of very limited space, a perennial theme in Japanese architectural design.
The residents of Ine Cho have always had an intimate connection with the sea.
Even now, commercial fishing provides one of the village's main sources of employment and was another important factor influencing local architecture.
Chihara explains that a funaya is a house "in which a boat can be moored. The ground floor also has a work space and above that on the second floor is a living space."
Fishermen are therefore able to store their equipment and boats safely.
The work space allows them to prepare their equipment before going to sea and gut or dry the part of their catch that is used for domestic consumption when they return.
Of the 230 funaya around the bay, only about 10 continue to be used by professional fisherman in the same way as they would have been used in the past.
One belongs to a line fisherman called Kato Hisauo.
At the age of 78 he has worked in the fishing industry all of his life.
He moved from the opposite side of the bay to his present residence while he was in his early twenties.
He and his wife lived on the second floor of the funaya while his inlaws lived in a separate building directly across the road.
Kato explains that the architecture is extremely convenient for a fisherman.
He says "you can do all your preparation very quickly before you head out to sea."
There is relatively little movement in sea level caused by tides and an island in the centre of the bay acts as a buffer against bad weather.
Kato now lives in the house behind the funaya and uses the second floor for storage.
He explains that he only worries about the safety of his boat in the most extreme weather, "unless there is a really big typhoon or something, there is nothing to worry about. "
In the past the roofs of the funaya were thatched.
Tiles were only introduced towards the end of the 19th century.
Even so, the character of the village has remained intact to an extent that is rare in Japan.
Chihara Hisato explains that "in 2005 the area was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings."
This means that Ine Cho's unique character has been recognised as an important part of the nation's cultural heritage and residents like Chihara are determined to
