Robot glider in test tank\u003cbr/\u003eDeep in the ocean in Monterey Bay, California, an entire fleet of state of the art undersea robot gliders will work together, for the first time with no input from humans, to make detailed and efficient observations of the ocean.  \u003cbr/\u003eTen underwater robot gliders will spend a month travelling around Monterey Bay, California, gathering scientific data as part of a research project.  \u003cbr/\u003eDave Fratantoni of  Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, says these underwater robots will offer unique insight into the secrets of the ocean because they are able to stay undersea for weeks, even months, at a time.  \u003cbr/\u003eStudying the ocean for such long periods at a time has never been possible before. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother unique aspect of the research is that the researchers are not onsite. Instead scientists use a virtual control room which can be located thousands of miles away. \u003cbr/\u003eThis allows researchers to share their data with scientists worldwide. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the project could have larger implications. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's success could lead to the use of undersea robot fleets to predict ocean conditions, track oil spills and better yet to protect endangered marine species. \u003cbr/\u003eThe data collected by the robots could be crucial, says James Bellingham of The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, since many of today's great issues, such as global warming, actually revolve around the ocean. Therefore understanding the ocean's activity and changing patterns allows scientists to address the planet's many environmental issues. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists are hoping the technology allowing the undersea robots to choreograph their movements in response to their environment, can one day be utilised in developing robot fleets that, without human input, could explore, not just oceans, but
