Close of Rod Burman's face illuminated by glowing valve\u003cbr/\u003eToday we take things like the Internet, mobile phones, digital television and satellites very much for granted.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're powered by microprocessors, and these tiny electronic chips are at the heart of every aspect of our daily lives.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut where and how did it all begin?\u003cbr/\u003eTucked away in a castle on the Isle of Wight, off the South Coast of England, retired electronics entrepreneur Rod Burman has built up a unique private collection charting the very beginnings of the electronic age.\u003cbr/\u003eSome people collect stamps, or vintage wine. \u003cbr/\u003eWhereas Rod Burman has a passion for valves, of all shapes and sizes.\u003cbr/\u003eInside his quiet home, Burman's collection charts the history of electronics.\u003cbr/\u003eShowing a group of guests around his collection, he says only about 5 per cent of the valves he owns are on show.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection comprises of nearly one million valves.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of his prised valves is a Fleming diode, from 1889.\u003cbr/\u003eThe idea of putting a metal plate inside a vacuum with a filament, was devised by the American scientist Thomas Edison in 1887, while he was trying to improve his recently invented light bulb.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was the British scientist Sir John Ambrose Fleming who was to discover it's full potential.\u003cbr/\u003eHe met Edison in 1888, and took some of his new diodes back to England.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1901, Marconi proved that radio waves could cross the Atlantic.\u003cbr/\u003eBut detecting the signals was a problem, they were too weak.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was another 3 years before Fleming realised the diode could detect the radio signals.\u003cbr/\u003eBurman says the name valve comes from the fact that the electric current can pass only in one direction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe world's first valve still works today. The filament's resistance to electric current causes it to heat up. \u003cbr/\u003eIt emits electrons, which are the electric current, and they're captured by the plate.\u003cbr/\u003eFlemings discovery launched the radio age.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the 1920's valve radios had already started to appear.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was a German company called Loewe who invented the world's first integrated circuit.\u003cbr/\u003eBurman says at the time in Germany there was a tax on radios that had more than one valve.\u003cbr/\u003eToday his collection has spread to an entire wing of his castle, entirely devoted to the valve collection.\u003cbr/\u003eThese are just a few of the many rooms full of valves. \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Haunsfield, a visiting guest, says anyone collecting so many valves must have a unique mind.\u003cbr/\u003eYet not everyone shares Burman's passion for valves.\u003cbr/\u003eHis wife Christine says she wishes he collected something different.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the tour approaches its end, Burman has another historic invention to show his guests.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled Geisler tubes, Burman says they were invented long before valves.\u003cbr/\u003eAn electric current travels through the tube containing gas. It ionises the gas, and the ions are what give the brightly coloured effect.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is how neon signs began.\u003cbr/\u003eHolding a mobile phone, Burman says it all started over a hundred years ago, thanks to valves.\u003cbr/\u003eChristine Burman says sometimes she thinks her husband bought the property just to store his valves.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite what his wife may think, Burman
