Wide of house under water \u003cbr/\u003eUnited States Army helicopters flew their first relief missions in Pakistan's flood-ravaged northwest on Thursday, airlifting hundreds of stranded people to safety from a devastated tourist town and distributing emergency aid.\u003cbr/\u003eFour US Chinook helicopters landed in the resort town of Kalam in the Swat Valley, which has been cut off for more than a week, according to an Associated Press reporter there. \u003cbr/\u003eThey flew hundreds of people, many of them on holiday there, to safety lower down the valley, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eA US Embassy spokesman said 800 people were evacuated and relief goods distributed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe floods have already killed an estimated 1,500 people over the past week, mostly in the northwest.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pakistani Army used boats and helicopters to move stranded villagers in the country's eastern Punjab province to higher ground as many parts of the region remained submerged in flood water.\u003cbr/\u003eAn aerial view from a military helicopter showed a vast area around the districts of Kot Addu and Jhelum almost entirely underwater, with only rooftops sticking out from beneath the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eThe province's relief commissioner said on Thursday that 1,261 villages had been affected by the floods, with around 1.5 (m) million people rendered homeless.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So far, flood related deaths in Punjab province are around 15,\" Ikhlaq Tarar said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe region's army commander said many people had ignored flood warnings and only realised the danger of the situation when water had already entered their cities, towns and villages.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the country's south, meanwhile, authorities began evacuating half-a-million people as the worst monsoon rains in decades threatened new destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pakistani government response to the floods has been criticised, especially because President Asif Ali Zardari left for a visit to Europe soon after the crisis began.\u003cbr/\u003eAs fresh rains fell on Thursday, bloated rivers gushed toward southern Sindh province, where hundreds of thousands of the most impoverished Pakistanis live along the water because of fertile soil.\u003cbr/\u003eMany flood victims have also complained that aid is not reaching them fast enough or at all.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistani Prime Minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, said on Thursday that evacuations had been the biggest issue for the government.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The big issue was evacuating these people. I have lost everything,\" he said, as he set about clearing away debris.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Nowshera district, the displaced have been trying to set up a makeshift camp near the village of Azakhail. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are in desperate need of the essentials, such as tents, food, clean water and medical supplies. \u003cbr/\u003eBetween one thousand and 1,200 people have lost their homes and taken refuge at the nearby railway track which is on high ground. \u003cbr/\u003eOne flood victim, Zaman Farat, was desperate for help.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are suffering in bad conditions after the flood. We are surviving under the sky,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the flooding is from the River Indus, which originates in the Himalayas and travels through the country.\u003cbr/\u003eMonsoon season in Pakistan usually lasts about three months, through mid-September. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a typical year, the country gets an average 137 millimetres (5.4 inches) worth of rainfall during the monsoon season. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year, it has already received 160 millimetres (6.3 inches), according to head of the National Weather Forecasting Centre, who report that the rains are falling about 25 to 30 per cent above normal rates. \u003cbr/\u003eThe northwest experienced \"once-in-a-century\" rains, hitting it the hardest. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pakistan Army launched a rescue operation in Shekhaa Village, 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Dera Ismail Khan. \u003cbr/\u003eCaptain Mahboob Ali said they had rescued over 600 people so far with between \"40 and 50 villages\" under water. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have no casualties report from this area, but people face huge property loses.
