He lived above me, a few floors above me and he was in the elevator one day and I met him and he kind of scared me because he was a little scary, he was a lot scary actually. He was very imposing even though he was a small guy, but he was very intense and as we started painting together, the relationship got even more intense.\"\u003cbr/\u003e7. And as I was painting it with him, I was looking at it and thinking to myself 'This is so depressing. I can't believe we're both painting this painting. Close up Miles Davis signature\u003cbr/\u003eA previously unseen collection of drawings and acrylic oil paintings by the late Miles Davis, a man considered by many to be the world's greatest jazz musician, goes on show for the first time in the UK.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition is hosted by Balmain Fine Art, who acquired this private collection from Jo Gelbard, his girlfriend and  artistic collaborator during the last five years of his life. \u003cbr/\u003eThe collection comprises of around 100 original drawings and five large acrylic oil paintings illustrating Miles' interpretation of form, colour and movement and in particular his well-documented fascination with and love of women. \u003cbr/\u003eBorn in Alton, Illinois in 1926, Miles Davis was inspired to become a musician in the 1940s, receiving first hand education from Charlie 'Bird' Parker.  The pioneer of the cool jazz era, Miles became a world famous innovator and his work on albums such as 'Bitches Brew' and 'Sketches of Spain' influenced generations of musicians.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1980 Miles began to focus his talent in a new direction and started seeking expression not just through music, but also through visual art. Following a stroke in 1982, Miles Davis increasingly turned to his art producing a body of work which, although seen in a couple of exhibitions in his lifetime has, since his death, been largely under wraps.\u003cbr/\u003eThe majority of work contained in the exhibition was inspired by his girlfriend, Jo Gelbard, a sculptress, with whom he spent the last five years of his life.  Well-known celebrities such as Prince, Phil Collins and Diana Ross now own work from previous collections.\u003cbr/\u003eCoinciding with the exhibition is the publication of 'The Last Miles, The Music of Miles Davis, 1980 - 1991,' - released on 18th March 2005. The book provides the first in-depth examination of the music Miles Davis played in 1980-91.\u003cbr/\u003e'Miles Davis The London Exhibition: Original Paintings and Drawings by the Jazz Legend' takes
