others.\u003cbr/\u003eA little further down the street is KISS - but who's to say a woman whose\u003cbr/\u003ecareer has spanned nearly 50-years didn't impact the likes of the\u003cbr/\u003ewily-tongued heavy metal band.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles in 1938.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the age of 5 she was already singing at her local Baptist church and on\u003cbr/\u003ethe radio.\u003cbr/\u003eIn her teens she began singing under the name of Etta James.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was in 1954 - at the ripe age of 14 that she was discovered by bandleader\u003cbr/\u003eJohnny Otis - in San Francisco.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a continuing helping hand from Otis and much to the consternation of\u003cbr/\u003eher mother - she relocated back to Los Angeles and she quickly became a teen\u003cbr/\u003esinging sensation.\u003cbr/\u003eHer 1960 version of 'At Last' shot her into the limelight permanently where\u003cbr/\u003eshe went on to write hits such as The Wallflower and Work With Me Annie.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 1960s were not only a time of political and social turmoil for the\u003cbr/\u003eUnited States - but the beginning of her ups and downs with serious drug\u003cbr/\u003eaddiction.\u003cbr/\u003eThrough the dark periods, though, everyone agrees, James never let her\u003cbr/\u003epersonal life affect her singing.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom the days of Rhythm and Blues, through doo wop, rock and roll and soul -\u003cbr/\u003eJames has stayed the course - influencing singers along the way such as Tina\u003cbr/\u003eTurner, Janis Joplin, Gladys Knight among others.\u003cbr/\u003eJames receives her stay just a few weeks shy of the May 7th release of\u003cbr/\u003e'Let's Roll' - an album inspired by rock and roll as well as the events of\u003cbr/\u003eSeptember 11th.\u003cbr/\u003eFar from seeing the star as a closing down of her career - she sees it,\u003cbr/\u003einstead as an inspiration to keep on
