Therefore, We would like to do our best to preserve the mansion and then open it to public, So, people have chance to see and learn these beautiful art works and the delicate architecture.\" \u003cbr/\u003eA family of unrivalled wealth and political influence in central Taiwan, the Lin family began building their homestead in 1858.\u003cbr/\u003eTaiwan was then under Chinese control, having been appropriated by Qing officials some two centuries earlier. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1895 Japan took it over but the Nationalist Chinese returned in 1945 after the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. \u003cbr/\u003eThey''ve been on the island ever since, split from the Communists on the mainland by a mixture of style, a new found democratic ideology, and of course, the 100-mile (160-kilometre) wide Taiwan Strait.\u003cbr/\u003eLike many early immigrants to Taiwan, the ancestors of the Lin family arrived from Fujian Province in southern China. \u003cbr/\u003eTo construct their homes they brought with them workers from their native province as well as a variety of building materials including cedar wood and large slabs of granite.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main structure in the original Lin complex, the Gongbao Official Residence was built by military strongman General Lin Wen-cha, who gained fame leading militiamen against pirates in Taiwan and then, on the Chinese mainland, fighting the rebel forces of Taiping Rebellion leader Hong Xiuquan, who fancied himself the younger brother of Jesus Christ. \u003cbr/\u003eLin died there in battle in 1864, and his son also a general completed the homestead''s construction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Gongbao Official Residence consisted of five courtyards and 108 rooms, a scale reserved for top officials. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was characterised by elaborately painted and meticulously carved doors, with pillars extending up to the ceilings. \u003cbr/\u003eThe main reception area was adorned by fading portraits, beautiful calligraphic scrolls and other high end works of art.\u003cbr/\u003eA central element in the residence was an exquisite theatre and a grand banquet hall, which served as the centre of the Lin family''s active social life.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, all of this has been painstakingly restored.\u003cbr/\u003eMembers of The National Taiwan University and Tainan National University Of The Arts team that took the lead in the restoration work, said when the project began in 1984, the theatre, featuring wooden beams locked seamlessly to spare the use of nuts and bolts, was in ruins, and they had no idea how to replicate its former glory. \u003cbr/\u003eResearcher of Tainan National University Of The Arts Jorge Chiao said they hope to keep the buildings authentic.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our priority is to preserve the original look of this historical mansion.
