Wide of the studio with audience applauding\u003cbr/\u003eA media phenomenom is bringing together Bosnia's splintered society after years of war and religious differences.\u003cbr/\u003eOrthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats and Muslim Bosnians are flocking to donate the little cash they have to get medical treatment for the desperately sick.\u003cbr/\u003eEdin Hajdarevic and his wife are poor and uneducated so they have no jobs and no income.\u003cbr/\u003eFor months they've been fighting to keep their baby daughter Ajsa alive. \u003cbr/\u003eAjsa was born with severe brain and intestinal problems. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter her birth she was pushed from one hospital to another as her parents have struggled to navigate Bosnia's labyrinthine health care system. \u003cbr/\u003eOne day hospital staff shocked the couple, telling them their child was incurable and therefore no longer entitled to medical treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eHajdarevic refused to give up. \u003cbr/\u003eHe contacted Almir Cehajic Batko, the driving force behind the Open Network, a group of 54 radio and television stations across Bosnia.\u003cbr/\u003eOpen Network is focusing public attention to the plight of the sick and the poor who've fallen through the gaps in Bosnia's social welfare system. \u003cbr/\u003eWithin days Ajsa became a household name in Bosnia. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of people came forward donating cash to helplines and a bank account set up to help the child.\u003cbr/\u003eFinally in August this year (2011) she was taken to Germany for vital stomach surgery. \u003cbr/\u003eThe operation has saved her life, although she won't grow up to be like other healthy children.\u003cbr/\u003eHajdarevic says \"Batko saved her life because I could not have watched her suffering any more, she would turn black and start twitching, dying. I was not in position to buy oxygen for her or her food, her medicines. I would have killed her first and then I would have killed myself.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eAjsa is one of 117 Bosnians whose lives had been saved by donations after their stories were aired on Cehajic's show on the Open Network.\u003cbr/\u003eThe response to Ajsa's appeal was enormous. \u003cbr/\u003eMoney was sent by Bosnians who saw the show on satellite TV while working in Afghanistan, the United States and around Europe, but most of it came from local viewers, despite their poverty.\u003cbr/\u003eMore funds were collected to allow her parents to buy the equipment that ensures that even when she's at home her brain is fed enough oxygen.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are also plans for her to return to Germany for further treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eCehajic founded the network twelve years ago when his 19-month-old daughter died of heart failure. \u003cbr/\u003eSurgery abroad might have saved her life. \u003cbr/\u003eBut although he is affluent by Bosnian standards, Cehajic couldn't get the 150,000 Euros ($199,320 USD) it would have cost. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter his daughter's death Cehajic used his job as a radio presenter to help other people in similar situation. \u003cbr/\u003eToday, millions of people tune into Cehajic's weekly talk show which highlights the plight of a gravely ill person\u003cbr/\u003eThe show collects donations in the face of a failing health system that has gotten worse as Bosnia plods on without a government for more than a year. \u003cbr/\u003eA total of ÄÅ¼Ë30 million (nearly $40 million) has been collected so far, with thousands making donations from a half euro upward, allowing desperate people to travel abroad for lifesaving surgery.   \u003cbr/\u003eWhat is most striking about the outpouring of generosity is that it cuts across ethnic and religious lines.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country is impoverished, still torn by animosities stemming from the 1992-1995 war when Muslim Bosniaks, Catholic Croats, and Orthodox Christian Serbs battled to anihilate their neighbours.\u003cbr/\u003eEight thousand people have had part, or all of their medical costs paid for by donations.\u003cbr/\u003eBosnia became administratively split along ethnic lines, but the Open Network crosses those boundaries.\u003cbr/\u003eCehajic's audience here is a very special one.\u003cbr/\u003eIt includes many who've been financially supported by the Open Network\u003cbr/\u003eAmong them is 9 year old Hanan Vehab, who was sent to Slovenia for treatment when doctors at home told his family his lymphatic cancer couldn't be treated.\u003cbr/\u003eHe and the others are here to celebrate Cehajic's 49th Birthday in a television studio which is hosting his show.\u003cbr/\u003eVehab says \"I am now well and alive. Thank you Batko, may you live a 100 years.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLittle eight year old Mediha Muratovic desperately needs a heart transplant.\u003cbr/\u003eEven if a donor could be found her mother would not be able to afford it.\u003cbr/\u003eRejhana Muratovic says doctors have told her \"Rejhana (you are her) mother, let me not hide it from you. You will find out anyway. Buy her whatever you can, give her whatever you can so you will not feel sorry later, because it (her death) can happen any moment now.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eOpen Network is confident Bosnians of all backgrounds will come forward with contributions to help her.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, the show also airs in Serbia and Croatia. \u003cbr/\u003eRuzica Mrkajic is the network's coordinator in Bosnia's Serb dominated districts.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"somehow, suffering brought all of us in Bosnia and Herzegovina together. We share our sorrows and our happiness.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMany, including Mrkajic, are amazed at how the show connects former bitter enemies that still can't get along.\u003cbr/\u003eBosnia remains split into two semi-autonomous ethnic mini-states in an unwieldy setup that has produced anomalies.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are 13 health ministries, it's a bureaucratic nightmare and the main cause of the complete breakdown Bosnia's medical care.\u003cbr/\u003eEthnic groups squabble over representation in ministries and it's blocked the formation of a government for twelve
