So it's like a first hand confession. A first hand experience of this person, so I thought of Coco Martin for that role because first of all I like his innocent look, because I already have, at the time I already have this idea of losing the innocence and of being another person at the end of the day because of that experience that he has gone through.\"\u003cbr/\u003e4. Some are doing things that are not supposed to be done in order to survive. I'm not trying to capture Manila of the Philippines in totality. I mean generally these things happen in the Philippines this is like a portion, this is like one syndicate you know, but if you're talking abut how is life in Manila, it's basically it's like this because the Filipinos we are 90 million Filipinos, and 85 percent belong to the low income bracket. So I think this is the best representation of the Filipino, not the 10 percent, or not the 5 percent who are very very rich.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. Close up Brillante Mendoza\u003cbr/\u003e11. Film clip 'Kinatay'\u003cbr/\u003eAward winning Filipino filmmaker Brillante Mendoza says that his Cannes competition winner 'Kinatay' is a \"tough film\" that he doesn't expect all audiences to like. \u003cbr/\u003eMendoza won the directing award last week for the harsh story centered on Filipino police who inflict bloody retribution on a prostitute who crosses them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe graphic nature of the presentation of the violence in the film is matter-of-fact, something that Mendoza said he is keenly aware of. \u003cbr/\u003e\"As I've said, it's not an easy film, it's a tough film and I'm excepting some audiences to like it at all,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"But I know there will be some audiences who will embrace the film, so I was prepared for that, I was prepared for that and I am excepting that,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003e'Kinatay' means \"slaughter\" in Tagalog, and the first 15 minutes capture the chaos of life in the teeming slums and streets of Manila. \u003cbr/\u003ePolice cadet Pepoy (Coco Martin) and his girlfriend Cecille (Mercedes Cabral) drop their baby off with an \"auntie\" and head to city hall to get married. \u003cbr/\u003eMoney is scarce, but they are happy, and everyone in the wedding party optimistically dreams of purchasing big-ticket items. \u003cbr/\u003eThe next day, Pepoy hooks up with friend Abyong (Jhong Hilario), who promises him a large amount of cash if he joins some shady cohorts for an unspecified job. \u003cbr/\u003eAccepting the offer, Pepoy watches as Sarge (John Regala) lures deadbeat drug addict/prostitute Gina, aka Madonna (Maria Isabel Lopez), into a van, where the thugs beat the helpless woman on the orders of Vic (Julio Diaz.)\u003cbr/\u003eAn endless night time ride follows, as the van departs Manila, with a terrified Gina watched in the back by a silent, terrified Pepoy. \u003cbr/\u003eOn reaching their destination, Gina is taken to a room where she is beaten, raped and finally dismembered. \u003cbr/\u003eMendoza said he believes that his portrayal of life in Manila is authentic.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you show this to a Filipino audience they would say this is exactly how we live in the Philippines, it's quite noisy, and it's a bit over populated, but it's really like that and people just go on with their every day life, as normal as it can be,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Some are doing things that are not supposed to be done in order to survive.
