Tire spikes with burn marks on road\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinians in the West Bank town of Ramallah woke to what may be a key moment in their history following a dramatic speech by their President Mahmoud Abbas at the United Nations (UN) on Friday evening.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian flags, posters and countless cigarette butts were the remains of a mass party held in Yasser Arafat square, where hundreds of people gathered on Friday to watch Abbas'' speech.\u003cbr/\u003eEarly on Saturday morning, workmen cleared stages and cameramen stored their equipment. Even when the dust settles, however, it will be unclear if Abbas'' speech will lead to any statehood, which the UN is set to begin to discuss.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt was business as usual at the Qalandiya checkpoint outside of Ramallah, where Israeli security inspected Palestinian cars attempting to cross. Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops shook this checkpoint Friday evening ahead of Abbas'' speech. \u003cbr/\u003eThe confrontations lasted several hours, and by late afternoon, medics said some 70 Palestinians had been injured by rubber-coated steel pellets or suffered tear gas inhalation. \u003cbr/\u003eAbbas'' defiant stance, pushing for UN recognition over strong objections from the US and Israel, has struck a chord with Palestinians increasingly disillusioned after nearly two decades of failed efforts to bring them independence. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the UN General Assembly, Abbas'' announcement on Friday was met by a standing ovation, a stirring sight for Palestinians who felt their plight had largely been forgotten.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Palestinian President has called for peaceful marches in support of his bid to win UN recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast War. \u003cbr/\u003eFriday night''s rallies indicated that his people are heeding that call, though both Israeli and Palestinian officials have expressed concerns that demonstrations could spill over into violence. \u003cbr/\u003eFull UN membership can only be bestowed by the UN Security Council, where Abbas'' request will almost certainly be derailed, either by a failure to win the needed nine votes in the 15-member body or by a US veto if the necessary majority is obtained.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Palestinians say they are seeking full UN membership to underscore their right to statehood, but have left open the option of a lesser alternative, a non-member observer state.
