Reeve with Shalom\u003cbr/\u003eAmerican actor Christopher Reeve visited Israel on Monday to study the country's treatment of spinal injuries and further his campaign for stem cell research.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael is a major centre for stem cell study, which is championed by Reeve as offering hope for people with spinal cord injuries, but opposed by religious conservatives and strictly limited by the United States (US) government.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Superman\" star, who has been paralysed from the neck down since a horseriding accident in 1995, on Monday met with the Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom in Tel Aviv.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring a five day trip he plans to visit Israeli research institutions, tour facilities for the disabled and meet Israelis paralysed in terrorist attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also was expected to meet prime minister Ariel Sharon and visit Jerusalem's Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site.\u003cbr/\u003eMany scientists believed that stem cells from human embryos could be used to treat a vast array of conditions, from spinal injury to diabetes and Parkinson's disease.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers envision creating an embryo cloned from a patient so that stem cells extracted would be a perfect transplant match. \u003cbr/\u003eBut some religious groups oppose the practice because creating embryonic stem cells requires the destruction of a human embryo.\u003cbr/\u003eReeve's visit, sponsored by the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles, was a rare trip to the country by a Hollywood star. \u003cbr/\u003eMany international celebrities have avoided the volatile region during almost three years of violence that has killed more than 24-hundred Palestinians and more than 800
