Shame!\" and urged Yanukovych to pardon Tymoshenko through a presidential decree.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Thursday vote was an opportunity for Ukraine to fulfil the main EU condition for the deal to be signed. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo top EU envoys, Former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and former European Parliament President Pat Cox, were also present for the vote and have urged the parliament to release Tymoshenko.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm calling on Cox and Kwasnewski, please the time has come to make sanctions against those who are stopping the European integration of Ukraine,\" said one opposition MP, Iruna Herashenko, after the bills failed.\u003cbr/\u003eTheoretically Yanukovych still has until right before the summit begins on 28 November to secure Tymoshenko's release either by pardoning her or by having parliament pass the necessary law next week and so fulfil the main EU \u003cbr/\u003eSkirmishes erupted between police and protesters in Kiev on November 25th at the start of a third day of rallies demanding that the government reverse course and sign a landmark agreement with the European Union in defiance of Russia.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters picketing the Prime Minister's office pushed up against riot police, some throwing objects at the officers or hitting them with flags and sticks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three days of protests were sparked by anger over the government's sudden move last week to pull out of the EU agreement and focus instead on trade ties with Russia, under strong pressure from Moscow.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 50,000 demonstrators rallied on November 24th in the biggest protest since the peaceful 2004 Orange Revolution, which overturned a fraudulent presidential election result and brought a Western-leaning government to power.\u003cbr/\u003eUS and EU officials expressed deep disappointment with Ukraine's decision, and US Secretary of State John Kerry cancelled a visit to Kiev in early December.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters in Ukraine took to the streets for a sixth day on November 26th, marching against the government's decision to freeze integration with the West and turn towards Russia instead.\u003cbr/\u003eKiev announced the previous week it was halting efforts to integrate with the European Union, saying the economy could not afford to sacrifice trade with Russia and would rather focus on restoring ties with Moscow.\u003cbr/\u003eIt argued that the nation's economy would not survive a trade war with Russia, after the Kremlin imposed restrictions on Ukrainian exports and warned Kiev it would raise new trade barriers if it went ahead with the EU deal.\u003cbr/\u003eYanukovych has refused to sign a political association and trade deal with the EU that has been several years in the making, despite previously promising he would sign it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protesters aim to force him to sign. Many carried photographs of jailed former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, whose release was a key EU demand to finalise the deal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe West sees her imprisonment as politically driven.\u003cbr/\u003eYanukovych said in an interview on November 26th that some of the protesters were trying to use the marches to further their own political ends.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am applauding those who came (out on to the streets) in support of European integration, but there also those who came to solve their political problems, who came with flags and slogans which they will use for the 2015 (presidential) elections,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eYanukovych added he would not be changing his mind.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is still set to attend a summit in Lithuania starting on November 29th, at which the signing was due to take place.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of Ukrainian protesters gathered outside parliament in Kiev on December 3rd where opposition lawmakers were hoping to oust the Cabinet of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov in a confidence vote.\u003cbr/\u003eUkraine's embattled president Viktor Yanukovych is facing huge anti-government demonstrations after spurning a deal with the European Union.\u003cbr/\u003eYanukovych on December 2nd had sought to quell public anger by moving to renew talks with Brussels.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the opposition was scrambling to secure enough votes in parliament to oust the Cabinet and try to force an early presidential election, in the biggest unrest in the country since the 2004 Orange Revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe opposition, which now controls about 170 seats, would need 226 votes in the 450-seat Rada (parliament).\u003cbr/\u003eEarly on December 3rd, thousands gathered at Kiev's Independence Square and marched towards the parliament building, shouting anti-government slogans.\u003cbr/\u003eRiot police forces blocked the roads leading parliament, but protesters appeared adamant.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We came here to support our opposition, they'll vote today. I want to see my lawmakers I voted for. Why have the police blocked the way (to parliament), why do they want to beat us? Why are they hiding?\" asked one man.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The government should resign because it is not fulfilling its duties. They only make promises, but don't do anything,\" said another protester.\u003cbr/\u003eYanukovych is struggling to reaffirm his grip on power as thousands of demonstrators besieged government buildings in Kiev, his party suffered defections and three cities in the west of the country openly defied the central government.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protests were sparked by Yanukovych's decision to ditch the political association and free trade pact with the EU, followed by the violent dispersal of a small peaceful rally in Kiev over the weekend.\u003cbr/\u003eRussian President Vladimir Putin, who strongly opposed the EU deal, denounced the opposition protests in Kiev as \"pogroms.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn December 2nd, Yanukovych called European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and asked to renew negotiations on signing the association agreement.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also said in an interview with Ukraine's main television channels that he remains committed to European integration, but would like to negotiate better terms for the fragile Ukrainian economy.\u003cbr/\u003eHeavily armed riot troops broke into the offices of a top Ukrainian opposition party office in Kiev and seized its servers on December 9th, the party said, as anti-government protests crippled the capital for yet another day.\u003cbr/\u003eTroops broke into the party's offices on the evening of December 9th, some climbing in through its windows, a member of the opposition party All-Ukrainian Union \"Fatherland\" told The Associated Press by telephone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe troops left after confiscating some computer equipment, Andrey Pyshbyi, another party member said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We haven't got answers about which group the people who destroyed the office belong to, what their reasons were for doing so - they didn't show us any documents. We just observed how stuff was removed from the office,\" he told Associated Press.\u003cbr/\u003eThe party is headed by imprisoned former prime Yulia Tymoshenko, a longstanding foe of President Viktor Yanukovych, and is the largest opposition grouping in the parliament. \u003cbr/\u003eCritics say Tymoshenko's conviction on abuse of office charges was a case of political revenge.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere on December 9th police dismantled or blocked off several small protest tent camps that were near key national government buildings in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eTensions also rose as a double cordon of helmeted, shield-holding police deployed in the street near Kiev's city administration building, which demonstrators had occupied and turned into a makeshift command post and dormitory.\u003cbr/\u003eThe moves came a day after hundreds of thousands of demonstrators crammed into Kiev, the biggest in three weeks of protests that started when Ukraine's president backed away from signing a long-awaited pact to deepen ties with the 28-nation European Union.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters are angered not only by the thwarting of their desire to become closer to the West and spin out of Russia's orbit, but by police violence against the demonstrators. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We can see many members of the Interior Affairs Ministry on the streets. They are armed with shields and sticks and gathering in the Maidan (Independence Square). We know they (the authorities) blocked a metro station, they are doing everything to stop people protesting. They want to frighten people, to stop them coming out and expressing their opinion,\" Vitali Klitschko, head of opposition party Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform, told reporters on Monday night.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a surprise move, Yanukovych announced he would sit down with three former Ukrainian presidents on December 10th to discuss a way out of the crisis that has paralysed the country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, was also heading to Ukraine to help defuse the tensions.\u003cbr/\u003eBut opposition leaders expressed doubts over Yanukovych's motives.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The latest events show how Viktor Yanukovych has called us for round table negotiations - a few thousand policemen and interior forces have come here and we have
