It's just one of the 250 koalas expected to be treated at the centre this year.\u003cbr/\u003eWildlife carer Michael Pyne says recent declines are the result of habitat loss, road accidents, misadventure or injury and disease.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's quite frightening to look at the numbers over the last five years,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the marsupials are at risk from car accidents, dog attacks, and there is a significant risk of disease for the cuddly creatures. \u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot are hit by cars, a lot of dog attacks still but it's the steady increase in disease that we're seeing that is really starting to cut into the numbers that are out there,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eCarers at the hospital say there's been a 40 per cent increase in the number of koalas treated for injury or disease in the past year - chlamydia, and koala aids being most common types of disease.\u003cbr/\u003eCarer Lorraine Vass is a voluntary carer for wildlife organisation 'Friends of the Koala'. She says 26 koalas have died in the past five weeks at Lismore wildlife refuge.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is supposed to be our quiet time of the year but quite honestly we don't have a quiet time of the year anymore,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe male marsupials are most at risk during the breeding season. They leave the comfort of their eucalyptus trees in search of a companion, and often move around at night time.
