Wide shot of penguins looking at the sky, standing on large boulders
In scenes which captivate countless visitors every year, hundreds of penguins nest lazily in the sparkling sand, preen themselves on the rocks and dart effortlessly though the crystal waters near the Cape of Good Hope.
About 600,000 people per year now visit Boulders Beach which boasts that it is the only place in the world where people can swim with penguins.
The African penguin, also called the jackass because of its bray, is the only one to inhabit the African continent.
It has shorter feathers than the Antarctic birds because it doesn't face such cold and is just 50 centimeters (20 inches) high.
Numbers of the cute, curious creatures have plummeted from around 3 million in the 1930s to just 120,000 because of overfishing and pollution.
Some experts fear that the species will become extinct in as little as 11 years.
Now there is a new feature on the landscape: 200 specially designed nesting boxes big enough to house a happy family and protect the eggs and fledgling chicks from predators, and above all, from the sweltering African sun.
Monique Ruthenberg is a ranger with the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town, where temperatures regularly top 30 degrees Centigrade (86 Fahrenheit) in February and March and recently reached 40 degrees (104 Fahrenheit).
Ruthenberg hopes that once the temperatures start to decrease as South Africa moves into winter, the penguins will move into the next shelters, no longer needing to be near the sea to cool down.
Park authorities installed the boxes _ made of a fibre-glass mix and shaped like a burrow and dug into the sand to mimic the real nests _ at the Boulders Beach colony as part of desperate efforts to protect the dwindling populations of African penguins.
The Boulders Colony began in 1985 when a couple of penguins moved in from a nearby island, decided they liked it and stayed.
More followed and authorities had to erect fences to prevent the penguins from invading locals' gardens.
Soon the beach in the naval base of Simon's Town joined Table Mountain and Cape Point as a ''must'' for tourists to Cape Town.
Stocks of sardines and pilchards - a main source of food for the penguin - are being depleted, and their migration patterns are unpredictable. Studies are being conducted into the impact of global warming on fish stocks and movements.
One of the main predators of the eggs and young chicks are kelp gulls, which often work as a team: the nesting penguins leave their eggs to chase away the invaders, while another gull sneaks in behind, snatches an egg and flies off - tauntingly cracking open their spoils on a nearby rock.
Venessa Strauss is the CEO of the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, SANCCOB.
SANCCOB is the only sea bird rescue centre in the Western Cape. Strauss says that rehabilitation plays a crucial role in arresting the decline of the African Penguin, and endorses the shelters being installed on boulders beach as an excellent method to help these birds reproduce.
Other eggs lie abandoned in the sand because the parents sought sanctuary from the heat in the water. Once a nesting pair abandons its eggs, then other penguins often follow suit.
The chicks mainly hatch in April and May and they venture into the water for the first time at 3 months.
Before then they are at risk of predators.
After that they face the perils of the sea _ only about half of those venturing out for the first time return home. Those that are injured and manage to be rescued and rehabilitated by SANCCOB get the care of volunteers like Richard Smedley.
25 year old Smedley will spend 6 months at SANCCOB as part of his studies in Bird Biology and Animal Science at the University of Plymouth in the UK.
There have been no major oil spills since one near Robben Island in June 2000 when 18,000 oiled penguins were rescued and cleaned. But in June and July, there is often a risk from pollution increases as rough winter waves washes in oil dumped illegally at sea.
Conservationists say the penguins need all the help they can get. Ruthenberg hopes that birds who have abandoned or lost eggs will realize the nesting boxes offer them sanctuary and move in time to lay a second batch before the end of the laying season in April.
In the larger picture, the struggle of the African Penguin is telling of greater challenges facing the marine ecosystem.
A group of volunteers called the iKapa Honorary Rangers launched a fund-raising drive before Christmas to persuade the public to sponsor a nesting box for 200 rands ($20).
The initial plan was to provide 100 boxes but this was
