Bush said on Thursday the House Democrats' version of a \"terrorist-surveillance\" bill would undermine America's security and that he would veto it.\u003cbr/\u003eGearing up his rhetoric, Bush said, \"the American people understand the stakes in this struggle. They want their children to be safe from terror.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBush went before the cameras on the South Lawn before the vote to encourage Democrats to drop their effort and, instead, support a Senate-passed version.\u003cbr/\u003eThe House is expected to vote on the measure later on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Bush, the House version would cause the government to \"lose vital intelligence on terrorist threats\" and would not give liability protection against lawsuits to telecommunications companies that cooperated with the government after the September 11 attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe law is intended to make it easier for the government to eavesdrop on foreign phone calls and e-mails that pass through the United States in pursuit of \"terror\" suspects.\u003cbr/\u003eThe law expired February 16 after Congress did not immediately renew it. \u003cbr/\u003eBush opposed a temporary extension and has warned that failure to renew the law would put the nation at greater risk.\u003cbr/\u003eNineteen Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee issued a statement on Wednesday challenging the administration's arguments.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also flatly rejected the President's remarks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The President has said that our legislation will not make America safe. telecommunications companies by people and organisations alleging they violated wiretapping and privacy laws.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lawsuits have been combined and are pending before a single federal judge in California.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Democrats' measure would encourage the judge to review in private any secret government documents underpinning the programme, in order to decide whether the companies acted lawfully.\u003cbr/\u003eThe administration has prevented those documents from being revealed, even to a judge, by invoking the state secrets privilege. \u003cbr/\u003eThat puts the companies in a bind because it puts off-limits evidence they might use to defend themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eBush said lawsuits against telecom companies would lead to the disclosure of state secrets. \u003cbr/\u003eFurther, he said lawsuits would undermine the willingness of the private sector to cooperate with the government in trying to track down suspects.\u003cbr/\u003eDirecting his message at the House, Bush said representatives should not leave for the Easter break without \"getting the Senate bill to my desk.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe predicted the Senate would not pass the House version of the
