The courtship dance is important because it allows the flamingo to find a new partner. The courtship dance starts at the end of November or the beginning of December - this is the period when the feathers are the most beautiful because the flamingos, like all birds, moult every year. The moulting period is complete by late November or early December. When the adult flamingos have new feathers they can begin the courtship dance,\" explains Frederic Lamouroux, Director of the Pont de Gau Ornithological Park.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the long-time symbols of the Camargue region in France, these magnificent birds had stopped reproducing  completely in the 1960''s. \u003cbr/\u003eThe natural islands in the salt marshes were no longer safe for the flamingos to breed and lay their eggs.  \u003cbr/\u003eDams on the Rhone River and other industrial activities led to changes in the water levels of the salt marshes.\u003cbr/\u003eThat made the flamingoes vulnerable to attack. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1969, researchers created the first man-made island that allowed the pink flamingoes to successfully reproduce once more. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We provided a new nesting ground by building an artificial island. We saved the flamingos. Man in fact, saved the species that he was previously endangering,\" says Lamouroux. \u003cbr/\u003eThere were 41,260 flamingos wintering across southern France in 2009. \u003cbr/\u003eThese flamingos formed 12,000 couples which produced 380 baby flamingos capable of flying, according to the Tour du Valat research centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe centre focusses on the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. \u003cbr/\u003eAlan Johnson is a consultant biologist. Originally from England, he specialised in flamingos at the Tour du Valet centre for more than 40 years. \u003cbr/\u003eJohnson was one of the original team that helped create the first man made islands in the region.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"In order to breed successfully, the flamingo needs to be on an island where it is safe from terrestrial predators,\" he explains. \"The main predator in the Camargue has been in the past the fox, but also foxes or stray dogs, badgers or wild boar. They would ruin a flamingo colony. So the birds need to be on an island which is surrounded by water.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis island at Pont de Gau was built last year, but breeding proved unsuccessful. 12 eggs were laid, but none of them hatched. \u003cbr/\u003eJohnson is now busying himself creating more artificial mud nests for the birds on the island. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce complete, he expects several hundred flamingos to breed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Flamingos on average they start to lay eggs in mid April, the 15th of April. The very earliest they have ever bred in the Camargue, based on 50 years data, is the 27th of March.
