Medium of Ares (the dog) and Welch leaving after treatment\u003cbr/\u003eA new approach to animal health is being introduced across parts of the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eAcupunture for pets is proving popular in wealthy neighbourhoods for animals suffering from various ailments.\u003cbr/\u003eAt ten years of age, Maddie cuts a formidable figure. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this 120 pound Great Dane is feeling her age. \u003cbr/\u003eArthritis and damaged nerves in her spine weakened her hind legs and brought her pain. It got so bad she had trouble walking and spent months on steroids. She faced possible surgery, which would have brought a long, painful recovery.\u003cbr/\u003eBut then a neurologist recommended a novel approach - animal acupuncture. \"I have friends who get acupuncture, but it's not something I would necessarily, you know, choose to do myself. So we were� a little skeptical. But we had some friends who had some good experiences with it and decided to give it a shot,\" says her owner Cyndee Clay.\u003cbr/\u003eSo for a little more than a year, Maddie has been regularly visiting a veterinary acupuncturist at South Paws Veterinary Specialists in Fairfax, Virginia. \u003cbr/\u003eVet Marilyn Khoury carefully inserts needles into points on Maddie's large body to relieve pain or to create therapeutic effects. \u003cbr/\u003eHer goal with Maddie is to relieve inflammation and stress on her spine to help Maddie keep walking. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There is a very nice point at the heel that links two meridians: the bladder and the kidney. And we actually go through and through here,\" Khoury says as she inserts a pin in a hind leg.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the many needles, Maddy drifts into a relaxed state during the treatment. The whole treatment lasts about 20 minutes, and then Khoury carefully removes the needles, checking to make sure none are forgotten. \u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture doesn't yield instant results, but the Clays say Maddie has regained strength, is walking well and doesn't need steroids much any more.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I really dislike the word alternative medicine, because it suggests you have to make a choice. And I think that should not be the case. I think you should be given all the options and you should go with those that do the least harm,\" says Khoury.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd some veterinary acupuncturist have even revived the traditional doctor's housecall.\u003cbr/\u003eCaroline Karcher's 19-year-old Siamese cat, Mariquita, has been getting regular acupuncture treatments for about a year and a half. \u003cbr/\u003eA neighbour recommended the treatments because Mariquita was \"going downhill\" with severe constipation, leading to hospitalization with an enlarged colon grave health problems. \u003cbr/\u003eKarcher says the only other choices were to let the cat die or surgery, which could have hastened Mariquita's death.\u003cbr/\u003eIt would be a stretch to say the Siamese likes being poked full of needles, but other than an occasional growl, she puts up with it.\u003cbr/\u003eKarcher, comforts the cat as Leanne Lipton inserts more than a dozen needles and runs a low electric current through them. \u003cbr/\u003eKarcher says the treatments helped Mariquita little-by-little. \u003cbr/\u003eAt first they were weekly, but now Lipton uses acupuncture, chiropractic therapy and sub-cutaneous injections once every three or four weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the first treatment, Mariquita had to use her litterbox. \"It seemed like a sign that it was, in fact, helping. So, that gave us hope. It didn't� As we continued with it, it wasn't like overnight she was better. It was a long process,\" says Karcher. \u003cbr/\u003eLipton's dozen or so regular patients also include much larger animals.\u003cbr/\u003eA rescued Saint Bernard, Ares, wears a protective boot to keep him from dragging a hind paw. \u003cbr/\u003eAbuse caused nerve damage in his back that left him unable to walk as a young dog.\u003cbr/\u003eHis owner, Linda Welch credits acupuncture and other complementary medicine with restoring the nearly 200 pound animal's ability to walk over the past year and a half. \u003cbr/\u003eHe still is going lame in his hind legs, which has caused other problems, including open sores from the constant abrasion dragging the paw.\u003cbr/\u003eVeterinary Acupuncturist Leanne Lipton sees him and other patients at City Paws animal hospital in downtown Washington, DC. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think almost every illness can be addressed by integrative medicine, complementary medicine. Some are considered children, just like children in the family.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLipton originally treated animals only with traditional western medical treatments, but found that they didn't always do enough to improve the pets' quality of life. \u003cbr/\u003eThen she became interested in acupuncture, chiropracty, massage therapy, herbs and other treatments. Now she mixes both western and eastern treatments. \u003cbr/\u003e\"So, being integrative, there's always some degree of western medicine, just like this. Some wound care that I'm going to do,\" Lipton says. \u003cbr/\u003eProlotherapists say the inflammation provoked by the injections cause the body to heal itself.  \u003cbr/\u003eAppointments run from $50 to $200, depending on whether it's just a checkup or a first consultation along with treatment.
