Surfer walking away \u003cbr/\u003eMalibu, California is renowned for fun, sand and most of all its surfing. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it's been missing a vital ingredient - the historic pier which has been the backdrop for countless movies since the 1950s.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite being at the heart of California's surf culture, Malibu Pier has remained closed for fourteen years. \u003cbr/\u003eNow after considerable renovation it's been reopened, sparkling with its original luster and providing the coast with a new landmark attraction. \u003cbr/\u003eMalibu has earned its reputation for glamour. Its twenty-nine miles of sandy Pacific coastline attracts celebrities and surfers from around the world, many hoping to ride the massive waves which pound the beaches here. \u003cbr/\u003eNow there is an added festive spirt with the long awaited opening of Malibu Pier, which was devastated by the El Nino storms in the 1980s, and was forced to close in 1995 after it took another beating from the weather and was considered unsafe. \u003cbr/\u003eThe future of the Pier looked bleak until it was declared a point of historic interest by the city.\u003cbr/\u003eIt came from humble beginnings -it was constructed at the turn of the last century, and was mainly used by fishermen. \u003cbr/\u003eLater in the 1950s and 1960s actors and actresses came here to relax, and the beaches are still studded with their houses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pier has been restored to reflect this era and it is a California state park. \u003cbr/\u003eMalibu mayor, Pamela Ulich, says the long overdue refurbishing was a joint effort. \u003cbr/\u003eThe opening festivities included a ribbon cutting ceremony, music, dancing and food. \u003cbr/\u003eIn classic 1940's style buildings, at the end of the pier there are two new restaurants, The Beachcomber Restaurant and Bar and The Malibu Pier Club. \u003cbr/\u003eA surf museum, a tackle and bait shop, and deep-sea fishing and boat tours will soon follow. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're all aimed at putting life back into the local community.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe pier is operated by a Malibu veteran surfer, Jefferson Wagner, known as Zuma Jay. \u003cbr/\u003eHe owns the oldest surf shop in the community, and having ridden the crest of waves here for forty-five years, he is respected by all generations of surfers. \u003cbr/\u003eWagner was instrumental in getting the pier restored. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the restoration of  the pier has also helped return Malibu to it's stylish past while ensuring there are amenities for modern visitors.\u003cbr/\u003eRestaurant manager, Scully Cloete, says the restoration is accurate in every way, they even managed to trace the original paint colour.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal residents are welcoming the change.
