Various of people walking along street\u003cbr/\u003eThe population of the United States officially hit 300 (m) million at 0746 Eastern Time (1146GMT) on Tuesday, when the Census Bureau's population clock rolled over to the big number.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week, the US Census Bureau issued a brief news release predicting the milestone, although some experts said it had in fact happened months ago.\u003cbr/\u003eCensus Bureau workers at the Suitland, Maryland offices gathered in the lobby to cheer the rollover and will celebrate with cake and punch, but the US government did not mark the event in any official way. \u003cbr/\u003eSome experts figure it happened months ago but officially, the population of the United States hit 300 (m) million people today.\u003cbr/\u003eHoward Hogan, Associate Director of Demographic Programs, at the US Census Bureau said it felt like a birthday party.  \u003cbr/\u003eUS population has been growing at about one percent a year for the last four decades, he said, but should reach 400 million by the middle of this century.\u003cbr/\u003eBut counting the population is not an exact science, especially in a country the size of the United States.  \u003cbr/\u003eFactors such as illegal immigration make it hard to be precise, and not all births are officially registered.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 200 millionth American was born 39 years ago in 1967, and the United States adds about 2.8 million people a year. The population reached the 100 million mark in 1915.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Times Square in New York City, the ticker announced the 300 million mark, and met mixed reactions from
