We've examined the effects of one month's smoke exposure on their brain appetite pathways, because we know that smoking inhibits appetite, a lot of people use it for that reason. But it's a little bit unclear how smoking does that. Melbourne might hit the anti-smoking lobby hard, as their tests on mice show that smoking not only decreases appetite, but also appears to affect metabolism.\u003cbr/\u003eEx-smokers probably tried to kick the habit several times before successfully giving up.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as being incredibly addictive, many smokers worry about piling on the pounds if they suddenly cut their tobacco intake.\u003cbr/\u003eMany fear that the need to do something with their hands may just mean they'll eat, and eat unhealthy junk and snack food.\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to researchers in Australia, it's not just a case that swapping one habit for another that is the cause of the weight gain.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring experiments with mice they found that smoking actually reprograms the brain, suppressing the hormone, Neuropeptide Y, which responsible for hunger pangs. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Margaret Morris, from the University of New South Wales, explains that while there are a number of chemicals responsible for regulating appetite, Neuropeptide Y is one of the most powerful.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Morris says it seems as though tobacco smoke affects the body's ability to burn energy.\u003cbr/\u003eSmoking tends to make people burn more energy, and possibly maintain a lighter body weight.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's not the case in non-smoking subjects, whose ability to burn energy decreases.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd this theoretical weight gain does translate into reality for many who try to give up.\u003cbr/\u003eOn average smokers tend to gain 2-3 kilogrammes.\u003cbr/\u003eJane Waterhouse, from Weight Watchers says she finds that many of their members come after putting on weight after they quit.\u003cbr/\u003eBut she's not convinced that it's something that can't be avoided.\u003cbr/\u003eWaterhouse says smokers often have an unhealthy lifestyle and by making small changes they should be able to control their weight.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a sentiment that is echoed by Anne Jones from ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) Australia who think that smokers are often looking for an excuse not to give up.\u003cbr/\u003eJones warned against smokers prioritising weight loss over giving up smoking.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says that studies also show that any weight gain only tends to be short term.\u003cbr/\u003eShe also says that as smokers tend, on average, to be lighter than non-smokers.\u003cbr/\u003eMorris says many pharmaceutical companies are looking at the study with interest.\u003cbr/\u003eShe believes the research may help develop a new drug that stops the increase in NPY when smokers stop and consequently helps stop the short term weight gain.\u003cbr/\u003eThe reality is that whether you're a so called social smoker
